Steering Wheel Scrape

Post by Tigz »

Yesterday the steering wheel started to make a scraping noise.
Not heard of this before, any idea what could cause it?

Is it almost as if sand or grit has got into the steering columm?

Yes, I think its the horn contact ring.
A couple of chaps have also suggested this.
Just didn't fancy taking the wheel off to find theres a common problem elsewhere I didn't know about.

I had this too and it sounded quite scary (expensive)
but I pulled the plastic around the column a little and the sound stopped, I think it may have come out of place and was rubbing somewhere

i had this on my mk4........its something to do with the air bag, you can see a tiny metal clip if u look behind the wheel and you need to bend it a bit with something!

low and behold i went out this morning and reversed out my parking space, and guess what the wheel had started scraping, just as i thought to myself at last ive got everything fixed and the gti is running fine. It just seems to be one thing after another. Anyway the scraping went away after 10min of driving but i will have a look 2mor and see whats trapped
