unclip the gaitor from the base and pull that upwards and there should be some sort of clip that will need to be cut coz its on pretty tight!
once that is cut, it should just pull off pretty easily!!
i think thats how i did mine anyway!!
If its the same as the MK4 then the metal ring around the base of the gearknob has been crimped to keep it tight. All you gotta do is stick a screwdriver in it and prise it open, then if you wanna put it back you can.
