upgrade alternator

can anyone tell me what alternator will fit a mk4 polo easily that has alot of power i was wondering if the 150 amp golf vr6 one will fit as i used to run one on my old golf
but i need either a single big one or a second average one

any ideas ?

Not sure. I know the TDI polos have a more powerful one tho. That may be a good route to go down.

My 9n 1.4TDi has a 120 amp alternator. Might be worth looking into.

half way through the door builds
got most of the wiring (i think)
gotta phone to collect the batteries
waiting to order the amps but i'm getting 2 powerbass da3000's
still not sure what subs to go for but i'm gonna have a word with a certain supplier see if i can get away with 3 - 4 15's in the space i have available

hopefully it'll all come together all of a sudden

not sure yet it's out of RE or powerbass
i have used both and i think they are both decent subs
if RE probable 2 subs
if powerbass probably 3 or 4

picked up my batteries today

easier to get the existing alternator recoiled to kick out more current than fit a different one as it almost always means custom brackets.

There are companies that will do this for you- they can normally go as much as double the power of your existing alt. costs around Â£200 or so.

bare in mind you may need a voltage regulator though so so you dont fry things if the voltage goes above 14.4volts.

i could get a 200 amp alt for Â£200
to recoil it to double still only gives me 140 amps and for Â£200 it's not worth it
as for the voltage i could always run 16v

true enough you could get the alt for Â£200, but unless you are handy with a welding machine you would have to pay out near enoguh Â£100 plus for someone to make up and fit the brackets to mount the custom alternator to the car.

As for 16volts... might be ok for your audio system(depending on the input range of your amplifiers, some can run up to 18v, but most will cap out at no more than 15v or so), but it deifnately wouldnt be ok for the rest of the electrics in the car. you would pobably end with a dead heater blower, light bulbs, starter motor and all manor of switches and relays.

get a regulator that caps the voltage steady at 14.4volts. even if the charge is at 16v it means you have a consistant reliable source of power with plenty of output on tap at ALL times, even ona long low bass drop with lots of current draw.
