How 'bout a brand new Golf MKI?

Post by ciden »

VWSA recently launched an updated version of the MKI Golf. The MKI, now called the Citi Golf in South Africa, has been in production locally since the introduction in the late '70's up till now.

As time went by, many changes were made to the little car. New engines, new grilles, seats brought up to modern standard, etc. Rumours has it, that production of this little icon will cease in 2005 - what VWSA will be replacing it with, is still a mystery.

With the introduction of the latest model, VWSA has addressed something our local buyers have sought after for ages - a new dashboard (this being the most significant change). With the new dashboard, the car's interior is a little bit more up to date - see pictures. Something the local buyers will be happy about, is that the new dashboard allows the installation of an aircon unit, which was not possible before - there were some after market options, but they were never really any good.

At the back, the rear wiper is now located on the glass itself, giving a cleaner, more up to date appearance.

The window dividing bar in the front doors, have now disappeared...giving the doors a cleaner look, and a much improved view. This allowed the VWSA engineers to also move the side view mirrors more forward, as you would find with all modern VW products.

Engines in the range include:
1.4, 1.4i and 1.6i. and models being the Chico (most basic version), the 1.4i, 1.4i.com (which you order over the Internet), 1.6i and the top of the range 1.6i Life.

So guys, how 'bout a new MKI? Prices range between R66,270.00 (£6,000.00 roughly) to R94,210.00 (£8,400.00 roughly).

Unfortunately the 2-door is not in production anymore - they're very scarce here in S.A. Only the most basic model, the LS, and a GTS version were produced in 2 door versions - but production stopped in the middle '80s.

The 2-door version have become a sought after item, guys stripping them completely and rebuilding them using new parts. I know a guy that fitted a VR6 engine in one, stripped the whole interior and fitted a Golf MK4 dash in there...amazing!

I have a 1979 model LS, still driven every day :) I get so many offers, but someone will have to come with a really wild offer before I'll let it go :)

i'd ahve it if they made a two door version. imo most hatchback vw's are spoilt when they're 5 door.only one that possibly gets away with it is the mk4 golf.

Isn't that a lock stock and barrel Skoda Fabia dash?? I mean, it even has the tray for the air cond'd drinks can drawer under the steering wheel. The stereo's straight out the Fabia, as are the vents (not sure about the round ones). The dash dials that can been seen also look to be Polo 9n / Fabia. A bit surpised at the wide being the same, though...

Steering column stalks are Polo 6n2 (6n also??) and the wheel's a generic VAG wheel.

Also, the alloys on the red car are straight off a Lupo GTI.

I'd love to make a MK1 GTi out of one of those :P

Shame nobody imports them over here. I'm sure they'd still sell like hotcakes...

That is amazing!

Seeing as most companies like MG Rover are aiming at 'cheapest car in Country' status. Wouldn't it be great if they brought back the MK1 Golf :D

It still has a huge following and bulletproof image, it'd sell like hotcakes!
Just a distant dream of course :( But wouldn't you just love to fit a reconditioned MK1 GTi engine and bodykit on it :P
