Clutch just gone advice needed.

Thought I was doing well on original box clutch etc then at near enough 91k my clutch gave in last night. The feel of it changed totally to start which sent alarm bells ringing in my head. Sure enough the feel of it got worse and worse over about 10 miles. Got to a hill and the revs rose heavily while my speed droppped. Then got to a roundabout and could only just set off with gentle revs. Clearly it was slipping badly and I managed to get it home over a 50 mile journey + had to take several long ways to miss hills, junctions etc. She's home now and its decision time. Has anyone changed a clutch them selves? Is it a big job? Do I require any special tools? I am a fairly competent diy mechanic and could get a second pair of hands if needed. Is the saving really worth it or should I just bung it in to a garage?

I have a 1.9 D so will the larger lump cause me additional headaches compared to a petrol? There also seem to be 2 engine codes listed for the diesel AEF & AGD. Mines a 1998 naturally aspirated diesel but not sure which code it'll be.

Any advice would be much apprecaiated.

Mine went on my diesel 3 days after i got it. It was my pedal box bracket (thingy) that went and my dad said it cost around Â£40 for the box and around Â£100 in labour costs. Hope that helps a bit.

Cheers. Think it is the actual clutch on mine though coz its slipping badly when the clutch pedal is completely up.

Just thought I'd say, us diesel owners gotta stick together

well mine just basically went bang as if it had stalled really badly then when I started it back up my clutch pedal was flat to the floor without my foot on it and it wouldnt go into gear or nothing. Good luck getting it sorted,

Going to get a quote from the garage to have my clutch done as my haynes manual step 1 vague as ever says "remove engine & gearbox from the vehicle. Once removed seperate the gearbox from the engine". It then tells you how to change the clutch. Step 1 sounds so easy when you put it like that! Think it'll be 2 days labour so could still be having a go at it 8 hours a day @ Â£25ph mmm Â£400 labour!!!! Do I don't I. Could do without the hassle but also don't want to pay that.

ring around a few garages to get quotes. Wouldn't fancy changing a clutch without a garage and the correct tools, personally.

Probably looking at a couple of hundred.

All booked in for Monday. Got a brand new clutch kit off eBay for 14.99 + 9.99 delivery. What a bargain

still can't believe it! The guy who sort out all my motors is swapping it for Â£168 which I don't think is worth losing any sleep over! Should be back on the road early next week.

Looking forward to having her back seeing as my Mondeo ST200 has a drink habit for Shell V-power and Â£60 only lasts me about 3 days (addictivly powerful but flaming expensive). Plus the Polo's got a few treats lined up waiting to be done. Meguires 3 stage wax, service, exhaust & full aero wiper conversion.
