Sorry if this is a stupid question but what does refurbishing the wheels actually involve? I've kerbed my alloys slightly last year Would a refurb sort out his damage or is it irrepairable if it's chipped through the laquer?

Black chrome? No idea... If it's the same as regular chrome, you're looking at one expensive trip to the plater.
Thing is, if it's done right, the wheels are first polished to the point they already shine like the pic above. After that, they're given the chrome treatment. All in all, it's more expensive than just polishing them - but there's bound to be someone out there that does a so-so job for a small fee.
The best polisher/chrome plater/carbon fibre artist in Europe charges about 1000€ for chroming 4 wheels. If you want gold plating instead, fork out roughly 2000€ and you're done.

had 2 of mine replaced under warranty from vw.
i was told that it was due to the whole wheel being lacquered as one unit and not being laquered seperately (ie the 2 parts of the split rim being done seperately). Therefore between the two parts to the split rim wasnt protected from the elements so was vulnerable to corrosion.
