Bizzare 5th gear on motorway?

Post by Petrol_Head »

Can anyone help with this mystery.

last week i had the throttle body cleaned and changed the thermostate.

The car has been running perfectly and no stalling ( touch wood)

Anyway... driving on the motorway and hitting 90 for a good 7 min stretch and with full beams (m4 at night time....very dark) and then giving the car a chance to cool down i dropped to 60 and crused at a slower rate. Anyway the car stopped performing... i pushed down on the accelarator and their was no response... i got nervous.. and began to pull over.

I stopped put hazards on and then checked to see if the new thermostate i put in was buggered. No sign of leakage from any pipes and the fan was in motion. I left the car for a min and had a cig, then went back and it drove fine?????

Has anyone experienced anything similar or knows what was wrong???

Sounds like it went to limp-home mode. No ideas why though.

As an aside, really, do not stop on the motorway (even the shoulder) unless you have utterly no choice. If you have to, don't go near the car, get up the bank as far away from it as you can, and wait for help.
