Hi there

Ive been reading the forums for a couple of weeks now so thought it time to join

Ive been running my polo for 3 weeks now and am quite impressed with it, Its a 1996 P reg 1.4SE not as quick as my old car (RS2000) but the build quality and smoothness beats the ford handsdown also the fact that im not forever in the petrol station helps.. so im happy

Anyway down to my problem when i bought the car it only came with the one key and ive noticed its starting to bend a little now im not sure if my car has the immobiliser built in to the key so this is where i need help

Hopefully if the pic works there should be a pic of the key can you tell me if it is a chipped one????

Firstly welcome! Not many SE's around.

Yes the mk4 keys do come with the transponder built in (good for security, not so good if you need a spare key...).

VW can chip a new key & transponder to your car, if i remeber correctly, it costs about 70 quid.

Thanks for the quick reply I was thinking it was a chip or something inside it so thanks for confirming it.

I think what i will do is just get a cheap normal key made up for a few quid and use it on the same keyring as the one with the chip in it and hopefully the immobiliser will be able to read it.

I got a key cut with the chip in for £35 form timpson mate.
The earlier keys can be copied , the later ones use a rolling code and cant be .

By the looks of that it is an older type VW Huf AH key rather than the later Huf HAA key wich is a laser cut flat bottomed key blade.

Your car may or may not have an immobiliser with chip, to make sure just slide a small flat blade screwdriver where the key blade meets the handle and pop it off if you see a black rectangular plastic chip or a tiny glass capsule then you have an immobiliser chip. I believe the later ones are the black plastic type and the earlier ones are glass capsules.

If the handle does not pop off it maybe the case its just a moulded handle and has no chip (then very cheap to get cut )

Cheers for that ive just had a look in the key and theres a little black chip inside. So im thinking take the chip out and plant it behind the dash somewhere so the immobiliser would be perminantly off, then just get a couple of cheapo keys made up

if i did that would the car still run fine?

That would work mate, but did you tell your insurance you had a factory fitted immobiliser? Also it would make your car easier to nick as all that is protecting it, is the lock barrel.

VW immobilisers lock the car at ECU level. I've got a non chipped key cut on the cheap as a spare just incase it does start the car but when the ECU/immobiliser unit searches for the chip and doesn't find one it shuts down after a few seconds.

If you've got a decent alarm and immobiliser system with at least 2 points of immobilisation I wouldn't be too worried.

I didnt tell the insurance about the standard immobiliser as i didnt know it had one DOH!! But thankfully the previous owner must of been seriously paronoid as theres a cat2 immobiliser and alarm fitted plus i use a disclock so i reckon i'll be ok.
