Gearbox woes.

Post by movin along »

Hi everyone. What a great site.
Just bought a Polo 1.4 l with just 22000 miles on her clock (wanted to put pic here but don't know how to?). Anyroad after driving for one week she started to crunch in 5th gear. Also seemed to be excessive movement in gearstick when accelerating & deaccelerating in 4th. I took the car to VW & they said the synchromesh had gone in 5th & they would have a look at it.
Oh and while I was there I asked them to change the rear view mirror & they broke the winscreen trying to remove it!!!
They fixed that & gave me a date to bring the car in to sort out the gearbox.
Day 1. Dropped off the car.
Day 3. Technician said he had found brass filings in gearbox??
Day 4. Technician phoned again. Seems to be a chip in 5th but cant see anthing else wrong apart from wear in synchromesh cones.
Day12!. Just got car back & its exactly the same?

Anyone else had this problem? Do you think I should ask them to replace the gearbox bearing in mind it is under full warranty?
Any help much appreciated.
Tony.

Your gearbox is still under full warranty?

If so, take it back.

Get it taken back, you've got a warranty so make sure you use it. Unfortunately the gearboxes in MK4 Polo's are known for being a little on the weak side so if the previous owner has given some stick it might have some damage.

Offer to take the technician out on a drive with you and point out exactly what you feel is wrong with the car, if you havent had the car long and they aren't bothered to repair the box then i would think about rejecting the car.

I bought the car from a vw garage some distance away from home so when I found the problems I took it to my local vw agent.
I phoned them today & told them that the car still crunches into fith & also all that all the gears were stiff. They said they had replaced the fith gear plus all the synchromesh cones & couldn't do anymore to the car & it was out their hands! Also that they tried to get the warranty company to pay for a new gearbox but they wouldn't authorise this( probably because the car was only 2weeks from date of purchase)
I had previously phoned the garage I bought it from just after I had it back from this repair & they said I had to give them the opportunity to put right the repair.
So I phoned the garage where I bought it from & they said they will repair it. This means I have to drive 70 miles to drop it off, however they agreed to give me a courtsey car & drop it off when the repair is finished.
All in all I am throughly fed up with this situation. any body else had poor service like this?

Does sound like a bit of a pain, but at least they've said they'll repair it for you. Unfortunately you'll have a bit of inconvenience but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Just look forward to using it when it's fixed and working like it should :D

It is a pain, but at least they are going to have it, fix it and bring it back to you and loan you a car, thats not so bad considering what some places would of done. When they drop it off back to you, test it before you let them have their car back.

As you have unfortunately found some dealers are not as helpful as others, your local one will want nothing to do with it as it wasnt their car and the way they see it its not their problem as they are not getting cash from you to fix it. Having said all this the mk4 VW Polo is still one the toughest and most reliable cars i have ever owned and is the reason i'm still in a VAG car!
