Advice desperately needed on changing track rod ends

Post by PeteGT »

OK so i have a mk3 GT and there is some quiet clunking as well as a small amount of play coming from the steering.

My first port of call was to check the rack to column bolt and thats tight.

I decided that as the car has done95k I would change the track rod ends.

I have done the near side and now im half way through doing the offside.

The problem i'm having is that theres no locking nut like there is on the nearside. With the nearside it was just a case of freeing the lock nut and then the track rod end just spins out.

On the offside it looks like its just wound right into the steering arm and there are no locking nuts. I have soaked it in WD40 for a good few hours but still cant get the thing to budge.

Does anyone know an easy way of getting it out or is it just a case that they are stubborn and im gunna give myself a hernia getting it out?

Thanks in advance for any advice given.

Have since discovered that the offside track rod end is non adjustable and does not come off the tie rod. If the track rod end goes then a whole new steering arm is needed.

Not too bad at £31inc vat but the one i just bought from GSF is kinked the wrong way. Phoned up to check the part number was right, and it is so they've ordered another in to see if they have a very unuseful set of tie rods.

Just wondering about this and would it be the difference between LHD and RHD cars?
