To be honest I doubt they will. If it was a brand new car and the problem arose then they would probably recall all the cars fix the problem and make sure they change whatever their doing in the new ones. The fact the cars are not being made anymore they dont really stand to gain anything fro changing them. Even if they got a bit of bad publicity from it in the grabd scheme of things it would be a splash in the ocean for them.

I decided to go for a quick spin now and the bastard thing is back and is worse than ever. I'm really hating the car at the moment and very tempted to sell it after I get the gearbox sorted 'cause it's just being an absolute c*nt. To be honest I don't know why I even bought a car with a history of gearbox trouble. And yes, I'm f*cking fuming at the moment.
Sounds like your going through the angst like i did myself! I was so annoyed with myself also that i knew about the problems...but bought it anyway!

You wont sell your car....i said i would after i got my box fixed...but now i love driving it again, the stupid GTi just makes you go through phases with the stupid piece of sh*t!

Option 3 Alun.

BUT, don't take it to VW to get the work done (an ex VW mechanic is obviously going to recommend VW). Find a Gearbox specialist to do the work as:

A - they are specialists in their field
B- their labour rate should be at least 25% less

I have no idea where you are located Alun, but looking for "gearbox manufacturers & repairs" in for North Wales brings up the following results from yell.com:

I've been quoted £190 all in to completely rebearing the box. I gotta take it out myself though. This is pretty good bearing in mind the bearings come to £100 from vw
