Hi peeps!
I'm looking around for help for my gf when she buys a polo. She's got around 2-3k to spend, and would like something around the n-s reg.
I'm not sure which Mk Polo it is, so hope I'm posting in the right section.
Anyway, could you tell me what the 0-60 is on the 1.4 and 1.6? What are the trim levels like? and what's the best/better ones to have?
Is it ok to put air filters etc? and what's the max size alloy that you can fit without modding.
And when I go to buy one... what should I look out for, what's the common faults etc.
Many, Many thanks.
DJ.
Advice on a Polo
Hi dj,
Welcome to the forum. A good place to start is the Mk4 FAQ.
You'll find a bunch of questions answered there already. Unfortunately, I have no clue what the trim levels are like in the UK, perhaps that's a welcome addendum to the FAQ too. I'm sure the locals will help you out.
Common faults can be found in this thread.
0-60 on the 1.4 (60 Bhp) should be around 14 secs, and the 1.6 8 valve (75 Bhp) should manage it in 12 secs. Well near those figures anyway. For more fun, consider the 16v (1.4) with 100 bhp, but that may or may not be within budget.
Hope this helps, and feel free to ask away.

I would aim for the 1.4L but that’s my personal choice the more electric toys you have the more likely they are to go wrong, and having stepped up from a MK3 1100 van I having noting but good words for the 1400 it’s very quick for a 1400 and the insurance is a group 5.
If you get one with around the 40-50,000 mile range check the major service has been done, (cambelt is on this service) the rest is common sense service history etc, and remember always take someone with you two pairs of eyes are better then one, as I found out. The car I bought had been jacked up on the sill causing the sill to rust..(how I missed that i will never know)
