(its not so brief, sorry).. I went to london yesturday, from b'ham, and the car was fine on the motorway, and was fine up until "hometime", i was driving somewhere in london, i was in 1st gear (was moving off) and the car, kept juddering. i put my foot down, but no response for a few moments, as it juddered, and then for a brief moment the engine management light had turned on, i wet myself!! but it then went away, yet the car was still acting funny sometimes, when in first gear..it wouldnt respond, for a moment, despite having my foot down, and a few seconds later, it would. When driving back on the motorway and on local brummie streets, it was fine...i was thinking the car was homesick!!, but my previous cars havent usually been!!..Does what im saying make sense? Any ideas people?? thanks alot!

"The Engine Management" made an appearance!!
Hi all, I'll try and keep this brief. A few days ago i noticed my car acting rather wierd. When im driving on a higher gear, i.e third, fourth or fifth, and i slow down, to which i change to second, (not trying to teach how to drive
!!!). When i move away in second, the car judders. for a abit, until its gone beyond roughly 3000rpm. It did that when changing to any lower gear. like when i go down from 5th to 4th, it would judder, unless when i went down the gear, it was above 3000rpm. to clarify, im cruising away in lets say 4th gear, i brake and slow down, change to 3rd for example, when in third if its below 3000rpm it'd judder, if above the car would be fine.

If your near edinburgh i could run vag-com for you for free to pick up the error codes

The lambda is on the exuast system you have 2 of them 1 before the cat and one after, i found that if it went wrong it sent signal to the ecu to tell the engine to shut down.NAZPOLOGTI wrote:Oh thanks, really appreciate it!! but im like 400 miles away from you!!!....down in b'ham...what is the rear lambda? and also, that vag-com, how much is it? and how do i get hold of 1? thanks a lot!
www.ross-tech.com for the vag.com software, and you can get a obd2 cable from flea bay,

Well the thing is, its nice to have VAG-COM but then when you clear your fault codes, then there isn't much to play with other than buggering it all up. So I would be very happy to use it to diagnose someone.
Here is what I used it for..... I was having same issue as you except I would get the EPC and Check engine on.

And this fixed all my issues! My fault code was MAP sensor implausible signal, Vehicle Speed Sensor Intermittent (which is cause by too much wheel spining).

Well he came round, we stuck VAG COM on it and there were two fault codes.
Engine Imobilizer Block - Intermittent
Cylinder No 1 Misfire Detected - Intermittent
I drove it myself, and I was concerned that the throttle response was a bit sudden, so I was thinking that the TPS could be dirty, but this would have logged.
The imobilizer fault I have seen before, I think that anything that inteferes with the reader on the plastic bit round the key can cause this. Do I remember people having problems with the ignition barrel? But I don't think that its the cause of it spluttering.
Cylinder No1 misfire..... Hmm
I would check the plugs are ok, then I would check the resistance of the HT leads, they should all be similar.
Then Finally, and most expensively, I would suspect a problem with the coil pack. These do fail, and they fail very much like this, fine then drives like a dog then fine again.
Also for our friend, the reason it drives with no power until you restart, is that it cuts out the injector for that cylinder, to prevent over fueling and damage to the cat.
