Greetings to all. This is my first topic.
After 6 months of satisfied motoring in my MK4 1.4 16v my car seems to have developed a slight tinking noise between 3000 and 4000 revs when acelerating reasonably hard. I've experienced no loss of power and my oil level appears fine.
Has anyone else experienced this or can give me any clues as to the problem?
Also my horn ain't working no more and I'm unable to audably abuse crap drivers. I've found the fuse and its ok but I can't seem to find the horn itself under the bonnet. Any directions to its location would be appreciated.
Cheers

Hi and welcome!
The horn is (if looking at the front of the car head on) is down in the bumper on the right hand side (passenger side) kinda under the battery area down near the bottom of the bumper.
Hope this helps.
Halfords do a replacement horn which sounds much better, and it's only about a tenner.
Sorry, can't help with your engine noise.

check for loose bits under the bonnet. you'll need a mate to hit the accelerator, or a very long leg, or you could just pull the cable from inside the engine bay. the air filters sometimes come loose but i guess that wouldn't lead to a tinking noise.
it could also be a timing thing which is when the fuel combusts suddenly - usually due to the timing being advanced (pinking).
i just found this site on google:
http://www.suntimes.co.za/2001/02/11/li ... otor10.htm
which explains it. Don't know if the mkiv's have this knock-control sensor or not, but if it's faulty it could be the problem. if it gets worse I'd get the car's ECU checked out for any error codes it's producing.
hope it's just something loose!

Tinking noise at 3000-4000 revs? Part II
Thanks for the advice. I'll check out the horn location tonight. I agree it was a bit disapointing to start with!
In the light of your advice I think it might be a carbon deposit problem as it developed after a couple of long motorway drives which I don't normally do. I think some gunk might have built up so I've got some gubbins to clean the system. It does seem to not like running idle as well as it did, which would support this theory. Fingers crossed eh!!
Thanks again

Tinkering
Thought I'd update you on my tinking/cut out problem. Took it into the garage for an investigation and they couldn't find a fault from their 5 minute drive in it (surprise spurprise!). However they said it could be due to a common problem with a "horseshoe" element in the distributer. I therefore agreed to have the whole distributer replaced (£60 plus labour).
Low and behold, problem solved (fingers crossed). Whether it was actually the replaced part or the reset timing etc is unknown but its running perfectly.
The tinking noise does appear sometimes but i'm begining to think its just a rattle.
