i'm looking at some alloys atm and they are 7J.
what ever that is, would they scrape on my arches?

7J means that the alloys are 7 inches in width!
whether they scrape on your arches depends on the offset of the wheels, usually 7 inch wheels will be ok if they are around ET35 i think!
also depends on the size of rims ur going for diameter wise! ie 14s, 15s 16s etc.
best size for a mk4 polo really is 15"

7j will be fine as long as its 15/16" and around ET33-38. A 7j wheel is actually 8" wide, 7j denotes the width between the two lips of the wheel, each of which are 1/2" wide. So 9j would be 10" etc.
