nitromors didnt strip my alloys,help!!!!

it removed the paint between the spokes but wont touch the face of the wheel which as far as i know is only lacquered.applied it four times and left it ages.used half a tin of automotive nitromors and it aint done a thing.
been told they could be anodised!? what difference does this make.they are standard vw castellettes.
was thinking of hitting the lacquer with 180 grit wet and dry to remove it but this is going to make my job alot harder.want to work through the grades before polishing them to a near mirror afffect.
can anyone help!? what can i do or use to get it off so i can start with something like 800 grit.
want to do them myself but may consider getting them acid dipped if it will make things easier!?
