I'm in the throes of doing this myself as I couldn't afford 7 grand either!
LESSONS LEARNED THUS FAR -

1 - it takes time. My car has been off the road since October. Weather hasn't helped so summer is a better time to contemplate doing this yourself.
2 - it takes a LOT of homework. Stripping and rebuiling a 1.8T engine is actually pretty straightforward, providing you buy a Haynes manual, and a good set of tools to do the job.
BUT - it's the electrical side of things that will have you reaching for the headache tablets. You MUST MUST MUST get the correct wiring diagrams for your CURRENT engine code AND for the NEW engine code too (for instance, in my case it's code AFK for the old 1.4 16V engine, AUQ for the turbo lump). AND you need to get the correct ECU for the new engine code too. Just getting a Motronic 7.5 ECU isn't enough, it's got to be for the same engine code as well.
There are two websites that will be the font of all knowledge for would-be convertors. These are
www.VAGCAT.com
www.erwin.volkswagen.de

One is for part numbers, the other for the vital wiring diagrams.
Please feel free to ask questions if you're thinking about doing this, I'll be happy to help...bear in mind that my car is still "work in progress" though...

engine and gear box mounts also need to be considered. The gearbox mounts are meant to be a bit of bastard!

Then you have to think about chassis strengthening, brake upgrades....bla bla bla!

Engine mounts, don't even GO there! LOL of all the things, it's these that are giving me most grief. Once I've got the relevent part numbers I shall post them here and, more likely as not, shout them from the top of Mount Everest for all the world to hear
The gearbox mount I believe can be adapted, with a bit of dremeling, drilling and filling with plastic metal. The driver's side mount is I believe a Polo 9N mount, though I will confirm this when the part arrives....
As for chassis strengthening, provided the mounts are good - and you're using all 3 - I'm told it shouldn't be an issue. What WILL need addressing, as wisely mentioned, is running gear. Uprate the suspension, brakes, bushes. I'm on Bilstein Sport shocks, Eibach Prokit springs, Powerflex bushes (which have proved worth their weight in gold), then EBC grooved/pitted dics, Green Stuff pads, Goodrich brake lines.
PHEW.
Many of you are probably thinking "fool!"
But you're installing a drive train that not only weighs 50kg more than your 1.4 or 1.6, but puts down a LOAD more power - 180BHP in my case. In a car that weighs in at a shade over 1000kg, it will GO QUICK! So you need to be able to STOP QUICK TOO! :D

Thanks for your input, But as i said, if this does go ahead, i will be buying the full car and not just the engine, So the ecu etc is already there and the loom, The engine runs fine and no rebuilding is required, also i have a mechanic who has his own business that will be doing this for me, also the person that is selling the car also built his own track car, Vts supercharged Citeron Ax, this thing will beat cosworths and skylines, Very Very Quick,

Again regarding this, all the brakes are there, a full set of brembos of the donor car, so just to swap everything over onto mine.

regarding all the mounts etc, These will be fabricated from new, as the mechanic is an accomplished welder and Mechanic, If it does go ahead, it will be getting done at CAS (Freeflow) In Shotts, Scotland - This Engine is the Cupra R, So 200 BHP Standard, then a nice littlechip etc,
