More gearbox help........

Post by Black16v »

My gearbox has been making funny noises for a while now. At least i think its the gearbox! i had a mechanic look at it, he thought it was a wheel bearing but it wasnt a low rumble and id had a couple replaced on my M.O.T a few months before....

Some people think its a noisy CV joint. It only makes the noise when im moving, not when idling and when i depress the clutch it makes a metallic scraping sort of noise. I also sometimes have trouble engaging reverse. It may be the clutch making the noise but i really dont know.

Probability is i need a new gearbox, question is this...........will my 1.4 16v gearbox be the same one in the standard 1.4? i know feck all about cars so this might very well be a stupid question. if anyone knows....
cheers!

it's a different gearbox, the 16v has shorter ratios than an 8v because the engine is more peaky.

CV joint sounds unlikely if using the clutch changes the noise it's making....

It could well be the clutch is on it's way out. Get another opinion!

Emailled the guys at ace gearboxes and they've replied. The dude reckons the 1400 gearbox they do is compatible with the 1400cc 16v engine but i need to check what the linkage type is or something.
This is what he said:

'Yes the 1400 polo gearbox is compatible with the 16V type.make sure the linkage is the same.one type is rod gear linkage, the other is rod and cable.we do an exchange gearbox at £385 plus vat@ 17.5%.many thanks julien'

How do i find out about the linkage type???
Cheers

Could Just be your Clutch mate, i thought my gear box was f****d, then thought it was the clutch, i know my thrust bearing was away on it tho, so got a new clutch and replaced, turns out it wasnt my clutch, just a thrust bearing i needed replaced, but my clutch needed adjusted too, Now it's slipping but has been out like that so the gerars dont crunch, need to get my mechanic to look further into it, i'm thinking it may also have something ot do with the Clutch Peadl Box

Thats the thing, i dont want to spend money on a new gearbox and find out it was the clutch.....or spend money on the clutch and find it woz the gearbox. Cant afford to have both replaced!! not if i want to do all the mods i have in mind.

Its not that bad really. I can cope with the noise coz i just turn up the stereo and it goes away! i just dnt want the clutch or gearbox to die on me and end up getting stuck up sh*t creek without a paddle!!

The only oher option is if you know any mechanics is to let them have a look at it for you, as said it may be a thrust bearing or then again it could be that your clutch just needs adjusted ? I really dont know mate, best way is to get a grese Monkey in

I reckon you're right there mate, best get it sorted sooner than later. i do have a mate that works for his step dad in a garage, ill see what he can do. I didn't think about thrust bearings.....could very well be that. I think my dad said it might be a thrust bearing on its way out when he first heard it but its really hard to try and diagnose it..........its a sound that most people have never heard from a car! Another thing is that my clutch has always been quite heavy....worse than my dads mondeo!

I think ill book it in for next week..... :D

trust me, the 16v ratios are different to the 8v ratios - although you may be able to fit an 8v box on the side of a 16v engine.
