Is my gearbox on the way out?

Post by alexperkins »

Hi guys,

Been having trouble for a while with the gearbox. Had the clutch cable done today, and its made a load of difference to the clutch, but the problem remains - The gears are notchy, sometimes not even going into the gates unless forced in on a second attempt.

I know the synchros on reverse are destroyed due to it crunching into gear, but I'm not sure how much longer the gearbox will last. Its done 44k miles now, so maybe on its last legs.

Anyone else had a problem like this, and know how much longer it might last?

Cheers,

Alex

I had a similar problem mate, and the way mine was fixed was the Clutch needed adjusted, it sorted the prob right out, altho the Mech had to over adjust it, so slips a bit - but this is only because there is still an underlying Prob, ie My Clutch Pedal Box, Which has went, so it should all be fixed tomorrow !

Reverse doesn't have a synchromesh to destroy in the first place.

Interesting. That just proves the idiot at VW who told me my car had a hydraulic clutch knows nothing whatsoever about cars!
