Oh no, strange whurring sound!

Post by M@Turner »

Well, it looks like my wallet is gona be a lot lighter coe the middle of next week!

As i was driving home from work last saturday, i noticed a strange noise. I realised just as i was getting home that it was my car making a sort of whurring sound when accelerating.

Fearing the worst i've booked my car in on Monday 19th for 60K service and MOT. Also decide not too drive it just incase and get lifts or train into work! However today i was stumped so had to take the car. To start off with everything seemed ok but then the whurring noise returned!

Has anybody else had a similar noise been prodeuced by there GTi? It seems worse when i engage the clutch. The whurring increases with revs and then decreases when clutch engaged and accelerator released!

Could this be a Cam belt issue or perhaps even more costly....gear box?

Your insight would be great! Thanks

Sounds bizzare, but you'd have to be a bit more specific on the whurring noise.

Sure you don't just have the 60k service paranoia?

I could be in the same boat as you here...

if you leave it in neutral/have the clutch depressed and rev your engine, does it still make that noise?

Mines making a whining noise if i just rev the engine out of gear, could that still be the gearbox?

Cheers for replies guys.

Don't really know how to ellaborate on the noise other than just the basic whurring sound!

The noise is present wether in neutral or gear. As soon as the clutch is pressed then the noise becomes apparent. My first impressions were cam belt but now i've identified it being there when clutch is involved me thinks its more a transmition problem! When the car is just ticking over there is no noise!

Right i got my car back on Monday but just aint had time to get on here and post.

The mechanic i took my car to listened to the noise and told me it was either the clutch release plate or gear box bearings. He said the bearings may have just become noisy as they sometimes do and just carry on driving as normal.

So basically i'm driving my car until i notice the sound get far worse or until i find the clutch and gears get harder to engage. Once this happens, if i take it down to him, he should have a better idea!

On a slightly plus note, he did tell me that my cam belt needed to be checked and replaced soon as although VW recommend its changed at 80k, it is advised its done at 60k instead!

Its 5 years or 50k miles now for cam belts as per VW.
Are you sure its not the alternator bearing?

You should be getting your second cambelt at around 80k. I'm sure VW lowered cambelt changes to every 40k
