Hi Guys,

Polo newbie, so be gentle.

Just got Polo 1.0 E 2000 model 43,000 miles and seeing as ive spent most of my money buying this car as its my first i cant afford to go to a graage just yet, :( i know my way around a car and just gave it a service(Oil and oil filter only).and a couple problems lately:

1. The car revs seem to be very jumpy.

2.When I start my car in the morning my exhaust spits out like black stuff (not smoke) which makes a stain on the ground.

3.The ABS light comes and goes but now it's just stuck there.

4. The boot light comes and goes as well.

5. I don't know if this is normal but as I press on the pedal it makes a airy sound(if anyone gets what i mean).

6.Another problem not sure if my car is meant to sound like this but i get a slight tapping from under the bonnet i can't tell where it's coming from.

Any help would be gladly appreciated and also how to fix it if possibly many thanks....

number 5 the airy sound well thats the mpi engine i know it sounds kinda gay and sounds like it sucks air but thats all mine sounds the same my abs light is always on but its newt to worry much as for tappin noise hmm hard to say av ya checked the belts to make sure ther tight anyways if any of this useless info helps al be gud and all

for 1 and possibly 2 i'd say first thing to try is clean your throttle body, second check spark plugs and leads and for 4 check your rear window washer pipe hasnt disconnected, take off your boot panel and you'll see there - water leaking in there can affect the boot light.

1 and possibly 2 is a temp sensor id say. Is it hard to start on a cold morning?

I took of boot panel and found the fluffy bit on the boot panel wet and the pipe disconnected i put it back in however the light on the dash still comes and goes is there a way to fix this or am i looking at a new lock?

Also the car takes its time starting in the morning the reason i say that is because the other day it was warm but still took time to start then again the car is only been used occasionaly is there a way i can test this or isit a case of putting in a new sensor also is this the one on the engine manifold?

Cleaning throttle body is that hard? if any one could point me in the right direction do i take it of the car or clean it while on the car also how and what do i clean it with?

Sorry for sounding like such a muppet first car and i don't want to break anything or waste money as im already in debt but i really do appreciate the help ive gotten on this so far :D

once it all dry's out it should be fine, take a hair dryer to it or something. Also i'd WD40 up all the internals as when they get wet they have a habit of seizing up.

Try the throttle body before the sensor as its much cheaper, less effort and is the cause of the problem more often than not. Check here on how to clean it:

Go halfrauds too and get a free battery test. It might need changed too.

I sprayed the WD40 and the sign has stopped coming and goin but when the boot is open is doesn't show it any more also the light in the boot doesn't work , if it's not one problem its another.

Also does anyone have any ideas on the black stuff out of the exhuast as i just started up the car and quite a bit of smoke come out of the car at the begining and its left a big patch of water which looks brown and run all the way down to the front of the car. :(

Also i took of my air box and cleaned it out and the left pipe going into the back of the box had like a sun tan sludge in it i took it off and cleaned it out but im willing to bet the other two pipes its connected have got that sludge is that normal?? :(

thats normal, the pipe is coming from the crank case, bits of oil come through it. One reason it may be spluttering is that the oil has been overfilled, check your dipstick

Stick that pipe (crankcase breather) on a seperate filter. Then clean out ur air box. Best mod that can be done for the polo performance wise.

arnoldo you meaning the little filters you can get in halfrauds? think pipercross do them?

You can get those crankcase breather from halfords or of ebay if you want.

I cleaned out the air box and sprayed the carb cleaner, i thought i might give me spark plugs a clean however when i pulled them out they looked a bit black and burnt and one of them looked slightly deformed if someone could tell me whats wrong as i know that isnt normal there was a lot of dry black stuff on them.

After i cleaned out the plugs and cleaned the throttle body it seemed to run quite well though, does anyone recommed changing the spark plugs??

The oil is just right at the top maximum mark cos it recently had an oil change so...

The main problem i have now is the exhaust it stil spits out brown/black stuff not smoke like water and making a BIG patch on the floor and it stains does anyone have an ideas??

Also after paying notice the tapping noise goes after the car has warmed up now so im guessing this is normal if someone could confirm this then it would put my mind at ease?

Another problem i find it really hard to engage reverse also when it does go into reverse sometimes it kinda thumps it into reverse.

Looking at all this makes it sound like the car from hell but i have faith in my car... :D

Halfrauds do them. Got mine in there for £7. Best mod u can do. Cant recommend it enough. Stops all the s**t gettin thrown into the air box.
