Electric Turbo on 1.4 8v

Post by skyline.99 »

I found a 12v motor in my garage and decided to try out this electric turbo/supercharger thing. Me and a mate fabricated out of tubes n gaffer tape going straight into the throttle body. The original fan on it was about a 3" blower style fan.The other side was the air filter. Other mods on my car are cold air intake, 4-2-1 manifold, and back box.
Anyway the tests were quite good at the beginning, the car seemed to pull much better, and more power at top end. Id imagine more difference if it was catless.
Anyway that was yesterday, today ive modified it even more, looking for a bit more oomph. I decided the only thing to do was take move the battery for more space. I decided to use jump leads to wire the battery to the alternate location. This didnt work because the cables were too bloody thin so all I got when starting the engine was a clicking noise. So, in one last effort I moved the battery to the passenger footwell, and found that there was just enough positive cable to reach the battery.
So with the battery now in the footwell using the oem cable (earthed nearby) I can now start the car.
I can use the much bigger space for a larger twin-fan array unclip it a bit anI was lucky enough to find a bigger newer battery in my garage with similar terminals so i used that instead. At first when I moved the battery the car wouldnt start because
The motor has 2 shafts coming out either end so ive decided to put 2 6" fans on. Again, its gonna be airfilter, fans, throttle body. I dunno what im gonna do with the breather pipe yet. Im gonna post some pics when its done.
Any thoughts people?

Well Im a little disapointed today. The other 3" blower fan made a bit of difference but somehow two 6" fans dont! (same motor). No ecu mods of any kind, just manifold, backbox and airfilter with cold air. I dont think the fans create any real boost to be honest. Been driving all day, and i recon it was quicker yesterday with the small fan on it. Nevermind at least i tried. I did a 0-60 test on flat looking road, using the CD player as a timer. Time was just under 13 seconds, a small improvement over stock. Wether the fans made any difference im skeptical. Interestingly, the 0-60 time is better than that of a 1.6 polo (75ps) according to carfolio.com
Jarno that Polo sounds nuts i have to say!!!! Im looking for a bigger engine now.... Cant be bothered trying to tune this godawful 1.4 any more. I know without ECU mods i was being optimistic but i thought it would make a difference after the first tests with the small fan. Throttle response still improved but nothing amazing. Gonna rip it out tomorrow and put the battery back in its original home.
Im gonna be on the look out for a cheap new engine. Anyone know offhand if a 1.8 16v from a corrado will drop in? 140ps

Jarno once again i have to say your mate is crazy!! Cant believe a little AEX is running over a bar of boost
Any idea of the power output of that polo?? 0-60 or anything?
I got a quote before for a turbo kit for the same engine. It wasnt pretty. Could buy quite a few engines for the price :(
