16v (possible) brake problems

Post by chubbster »

hello again people, i havent been on for the last few months, u know how it is work work work. its a pain in the bloody arse. anyway its good to see the sites doing so well.

ive got a slight grumble with my brakes, when i slam on theres a clunking as u reach standstill. ive also noticed this when goin down a steep hill when slowing for a junction. u can actually feel it through the pedal, it does my head in. the cars a 98' 16v with abs. im not a mechanically minded person so do u know wot it is? ive been thinking warped brake discs or worn pads. any ideas would be welcome.

cheers

Hi chubbster had been wondering what you were up to  . How's the IOM ?.
Without seeing your car it's hard to say what the problem is. I would suggest if you can to get someone to have a look at it for you to be on the safe side.

it sounds like possibly a gearbox mounting or a cv joint. book it into a garage and let em have a look.

welcome back mate 8)

cheers peeps, its good timing cos the service indicator has just popped up and its now booked in for the new year at a (shock!) main dealer. good to keep the full VWSH. i'll ask em about it and let u know wot they say.

about the isle of man....mmmm..wot can i say...bloody brillant roads!
if uve got the cash to take ur car over u should its an experience. the roads are awesome and most of the drivers there know how to use em so theres no waiting to overtake. the one bad thing about the IOM is the police state thats goin on. i got caught doin 42mph in a 30 and got fined £150, luckily cos my license is UK i get no points. my advice is rag the national speed zones and drive like a granny in controlled zones. national speed means as fast as ur car can go! very nice!

oh yeah the degree im doin is goin alright as well, i guess, at least the dessitation project im doing means i have to travel the length of the island twice a week. wot a blissful chore!

Good to hear you're doing ok :D . I'd love to go to the IOM at some point, I had heard the roads were good  .
I have my 16V booked in for a major service in a few weeks time.
It will be it's first non dealer service, couldn't justify their prices anymore !.

There was a recall to do with brake servo piping, get them to do that while ur in getting ripped off at the stealers!! But think it sounds like a cv boot too, if there is loads of grease around the back of the brake disc then that'll probably be what it is

tell me about it the price is horrendous. its the 40k service so its £228! i could almost get the suspension kit ive been after with that.

ive already had the recall work done on the brakes, well the lad who owned it before me had.

im starting to think that the problem isnt really a problem and may just be the abs kicking in. out on the icy roads tonight i felt it a few times under normal braking, seems to be normal perhaps? if it is its well over the top, it really kicks the pedal. ive now mentioned it to the dealers so there goin to check alls well. do ur cars have abs? if they do have u felt this?

that could be the problem, the abs does kick through the pedal quite hard, as if the brakes were juddering.

turns out the brake discs were warped and the pads are worn. maybe 2 much hard use into bends! also the rocker gaskets gone, bugger! at least i got the delights of seeing all the gorgeous women who work in Volkswagon Danes in Chester. congratulations to the manger who hired them!
