I currently own a Polo 1.4 16V 6N2 75bhp model and have just started having problems with selecting 1st and reverse gears when the car is running and warm.
I know gearboxes are a common fault with the 6n2 but its only hit 40k this month so was wondering what you lot think it could be?
Am I looking at a new box or can I get away with something a lot simpler?

be on the look out for a new box mate, 40k sounds about the time when gearbox trouble arrives, however mine went at 57k and cost £570 for the box+labour
Should I get a new box and get that reconditioned then? As even though I could find a low mileage box its unlikely to be in tip top condition don’t you think?
also what bits are likely to be needed to be done to the gearbox if i get it reconditioned?

normally its the seal that brakes so you can get it recon! mine was sent off to see if they could recon it but was in to much of a state, i suppose if you have caught it early then there mite be a chance you can get yours recond mate, just be prepared to dig deep in them pockets! any other questions mate, iam quite willing to help!
Rite I’ve just been out in it and it wont even bother going in reverse now without a crunch so have to turn the engine off stick it in reverse then start it again with the clutch down which stops the grinding crunch.
Looks like it’s definitely the box. Going to have to find one ASAP and get it fitted.
Has anyone ever fitted one of these themselves?
Is it difficult? Am I going to run into any other random problems while doing the swap?

with the sounds of it mate, you havent an idea about boxes so i would attempt changing one, with knowledge i would say yes but without it no lol
to stop it grinding in reverse put the clutch down put it into 1st gear, take it back out of 1st, put it into reverse, that should stop the grinding mate, and yup grinding in reverse is deffinatly a sign of a fooked box, and it isnt a case of a swap either, you have to drain oils and top oils back up etc
I’ve done Golf mk1 boxes and an Golf Mk2 box but never had a go on the polos or any newer cars to think of it. Think am going to have to take it down to a specialist. Good thing student loan just kicked in. Lol

Right! Ive found out it aint the gearbox but the pedal box has snapped!
Any one had the pleasure of removing a pedal box from a polo 6n2? Or should I say pain lol?
Wanted to know if you had to remove the steering column to get the box out as it says nothing about removing it in the Haynes manual however I have been told it will be necessary to remove it to remove the pedal box?
there was a DIY guide on here somewhere, i have had a quick look but cant find it, the part is £26+vat from vw, when mine cracked, it cost £200 because they had to reposition my alarm control unit, if they didnt have to do that then it would of been around £150 so if you can find the DIY guide then mayb you can do it yourself mate
Just been doing this all day today and managed to fit the new pedal box but the break pedal is fu*ked! It wont return back up to where it should hit the break light switch and I
Haven’t got a clue what it could be?
I replaced the break pedal as instructed by VW with the spring intact and even removed the servo to ensure the rod was hitting the master cylinder in the right place but Still no luck with the pedal coming up!
VW agreed to replace my pedal box for free as it is a safetly recall on the gti's. However they said they'd charge me £40 just to diagnose it. Don't suppose you could tell me what I need to check to know the pedal box has gone. Only symptoms are creaky clutch pedal at the moment
I found with mine it was a case of the hight of the pedal becoming lower.
Compare it to your break pedal, as the clutch and break should almost be inline.
The best bet would be to remove the lower trim and lower dash surround on the drivers side and lie on your back and look up with a torch to see if the bracket has signs of breaking.
Will get some Pics up of mine after I took it out so u can see were it was broken.
