Polo GTi Turbo Gearbox issues

Post by Jeff GTi »

im having a problem with my gear box for the past few weeks, changing from first into second at mid to high revs it crunches going in to second even with the clutch fully pressed in, but theres no problems anywhere else or on any other gear changes

iv had it to a friend of mine locally who has a vw specialist garage look at it and drive it and he says its likely to be the syncromesh in first to second from the symptoms he found on driving it

the cars spent all day today at vw to diagnose the problem to be recitified on warrenty, i recieved a call an hour and a half ago to say they cant find a fault and to get back for a road test to show the issue

i did, going much out of my way to get there and back with no car, i highlighted the problem 3 times at 3 different rev ranges and they have come back with the answer of ...

... at up to 6k revs your asking the car to do too much by changing gear

wtf, thats not even at the redline i bought a gti so i can drive it hard and not like a pansy

they are getting back to me with a decision either today or tomorrow with weather or not vw will change the gearbox on warrenty or not, but he said they'll likely refuse it as its not in every day usage types of driving where the fault occurs

what a load of junk

anyone any helping words of wisdom or past experiences that may re assure or help me

or if the worst comes to the worst, anyone know of any uprated gear boxes i can get,or info. seems it may be the right time to fit lsd if i need to buy a box out of my pocket eh

sorry for the rant, but as you can imagine im feeling a little low at the min

We can find a problem seems to be VW's standard response when they cannot fix something! I have experienced this to GREAT length with them.

Keep persisting Jeff - if you don't get a satisfactory response ask them for their customer service dept details at head office (this usually worries them thinking your going to complain to HO). If that doesn't work - write a letter of complaint to them and also cc a copy to the dealer.

I did the above and got the issue sorted (kinda) but also have a nice discount on parts and labour for the entire length i own the car.

cheers dino yeah i never made it easy for them to get rid of me rest assured

iv heard back from vw 10 mins ago

they are replacing the gearbox on warrenty so im over the moon, should get the new o2j gearbox in and get it on in a few weeks tops

so a couple of weeks sensible driving then back to fun fun fun haha

not to mention as apr tuned now do an upgrade map to stage 2 software so i can potentially take the wee beast up to 240 ish bhp from 214 for £150 so thats great, as i already have the turbo back exhaust and air intake and filter mods

haha

good result from what seemed a poor day to start

Hi Jeff!

I had this problem in my gti back in january time! on mine i noticed that it was higher up in the rev range when you drive it harder than normal..

..this put a downer on things really as you dont really dare drive your car to what it can actually do.

I took mine down to my dealership and they replaced the 2nd gear sync for me under warranty, but they refused to change the gearbox as it was only 2nd gear sync mesh that was damaged..

good to hear you got it sorted though!

it drives a hell of a lot better once its been fixed!

yeah i know what you mean about the downer

my dealership have ordered me a complete new gear box as they say swarf or chipping of the broken or defective part swirling in the gearbox will be causing more damage, so will just replace the whole item

this is great news to me, really great

im just currently trying now to weigh up weather to get the car colour coded and get the chrome boot strip or get stage 2 software and 240 bhp apposed to the 214 bhp i have now

thats not bad then really! they said to me that if anything else goes wrong related to the gearbox, then will swap it without hesitation, so i guess thats more or less the same lines as you lol

ive thought about colour coding, but i reckon the grey breaks up the colour in the car and looks good! especially when its lowered and its got a mean stance! yeh the chrome boot strip looks good, but when i did a quick photoshop it looked lost because there is no other chrome on the car, so i decided against it lol

no sitting at about 2500 - 3k revs and boost kicks in at 2200 rpm on mine

if yours aint mapped you will find fuel economy worse and believe me it gets noticable better once its been remapped as its easier to drive with less effort

must just be a difference in driving style, or maybe mines more worn in at 9000 miles, i had the map put on at 8 miles from new so it may be happier and fully bedded in now?

thats all i can think of
