Post by jay_666 »

She just failed her MOT

Both headlamps aim too high :? - £7.50
Needs new wishbone - £55
Needs new front brake pads - £35
Wheel bearing needs tightening £5
Backbox has a hole in it - £45
Brake pipe corroded - £40

Thats £187.50!

MOT expires tomorrow aswell, and ive got her booked in for Wednesday to have the work done.

Where do i stand with the backbox? Could i not just ram some exhaust putty in the hole?

As far as I am aware if it doesn't leak, it should pass, putty or not.

I'm surprised it failed on brake pads, I'd have thought if they worked it would be fine!

1) you realise you can adjust the headlights yourself... £7.50 seems stupid for 2 mins work
2) repairing the hole will take a long time to get right (gases will escape unless you do a very good job). but it should pass if it doesn't leak

I hate to say this, but the stuff you've posted is all repairs needed to make the car safe. would you be happy if they let you go and passed you, only for your brake pipe to fall apart or front brakes to fail? I think the price is fair enough and it seems you need to get it fixed :(

the price seems quite fair, as garage prices go.

Yeh, im not really moaning about the prices. They include labour too
Its just the fact that this has halted my project alot. I was supposed to be fitting my coilies tomorrow but thats going to have to wait a week now. Its just annoying that its costing me £200 to get the car back to roadworthy condition and i only bring home £300 a month :(
Ah well, work will commence again next month. Migh start a little write up thread, with pics as i go along. Something along the lines of 'budget dub'

Id get a new backbox if its got a hole in it. I think you can get them cheaper than £45, look around perhaps?

I just paid £134 for 2 front types (ceat?) and tracking...

Couple of weeks before that I had to get a cambelt... £110...(good deal with all official parts!)

So its not too bad failing the test and £100, could of been worse :)

I agree the jobs all need doing. Thing is garages cost sooooo much mainly labour I know. Is there anyone that could give you a hand to do the work required?
The backbox should not be hard and will be cheaper if you get a new box and fit it yourself.
I recently got my polo but one of the first jobs that I ever tackled on a car with almost zero experience was the front brake pads.
