9n3 front bumper removal / guide / help

Post by Jeff GTi »

ok im gonna need all your help here,

has anyone got any experience with removing the front bumper on the 9n3

as my headlights have a few rather big chips in them iv decided to bite the bullet and buy new, which i now have, so will need to fit them

does the bumper need removing to fit the lights??????

but how does the bumper come off?????????

i know how to get the lower valance off and the grill, and i know theres 4 hex head screws just above the grill, but are there any more and if yes, then where?

cheers in advance

IF its the same as the 9n

there are 2 in the front of the bumper behind the fog grills
3 or 4 in each wheel arch, 3 under the front grill

vw's are too well made!

You didn't need to on the 9n so i doubt that would have changed on the 9n3

okay i've just taken off my bumper.

I did it because of the accident (see earlier post!) i had turned out to be worse.. There may not have been any visible marks, but the headlamp was wobbly!! So i've taken off the bumper in order to superglue it all back together until i get some new front lights.

Basically there are 5 screwes on each wheel arch. At the join of the bumper and the front side metal are the two top screws on the wheel arch. they are SO close and SO difficult to get out, use a mirror and a strong light and an hour and you will be fine lol (mine may have been hard cos of the accident).

Then the rest is easy, take off the front grilles, the fog light grilles (ignore the bottom middle one), take off the airbag thingy, unhook it from the hooks in behind the fog grilles. Take off loads of torx's on the top. Take off all the screws underneath (3 either end, then those weird plastic ones, you need a plier). then just YANK and it should come off. There are about 31 screws in total.

I need to write a nice PDF for this, but as its dark and I've finished supergluing (i have the daunting task of putting it all back together), I'll do it when i get the new lights.

Give yourself a few hours and plenty of patience and you'll be fine. Put a mat or something underneath the front half of the car too, so you can lean on it and put the bumper on it when you're finished.

Just a quick question though, from where did you get your front lights? I'm thinking about getting those black ones from ebay in germany...

Just managed to put my bumper together!! very happy now, but you can still feel the lamp a bit dodgy, I think even the whole bumper is ever so slightly bent so it doesnt fit flush on the right side (where it was hit). I'm getting a cup bumper anyway, so it should be fine :D

Fitting it together is much much easier as you know where all the screws go. I still however havnt been able to put those weird plastic clips in yet. It was pitch black outside and the torch wasnt great so i'll try again tomorrow.

I wanna get Cup bumpers now!!
