Personally I would say it was the pedal box. I had exactly the same, started with the clutch pedal creaking when I pressed down on it and at first couldn't get into reverse and first then this worked its way through the gears. does the clutch pedal sit lower than the brake pedal? Cost me £121 at VW to get it fixed and possibly going to get refund from vw as its a recall part. I know someone on here has fixed it them self if you fell you wanted to take on that challenge. Parts them self only cost bout £30.

[quote="Arnoldo"]@ Polobear - was urs a gti model? Did u just go in and ask them to change the pedal box or what way did u put it?
No its the 1.4 16v. I simply called them and said my pedal box had gone and asked what there policy on it was as it was recalled part. Had a bit of a nightmare at first as they quoted me £121 for the job and when I picked the car up they gave me a bill for £300!! Luckily after a short rant and rave they only charged me the original £121 and as I said before Volkswagen should refund the rest!!
Simply just sound like you know what your talking about. Its scares them!!

I don't think the crunching of any gear should be normal! It's normally the starting point of something going wrong, but I could be mistaken.h4r1s wrote:Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but is crunching in reverse gear normal because there is no synchro right? or do i need to adjust the clutch linkage? dad keeps telling me that it shouldn't happen
Thanks, Haris

My dad tells me exactly the same - i continually tell him its a gearbox issue. It crunches for me most of the time, and yes your right in saying there no synchro. I think it is just where the cogs have been spinning one way, then the crunch is as they are forced to go backwards.
The linkage may make a difference, although I've had mine adjusted twice and it makes no difference whatsoever

Right Guys, The Crunching and things and feeling tight going into gear, you prob just need the clutch adjusted mate, nothing more ! as for the creaking pedal, could more than likely be your Clutch Peadal box, Nowt to do with the cable, these dont have the problem,
Also aswell, not saying i'm right or anyone else, but get a mechanic to diagnose these prooblems, as forums can be awash with wrong info, what might work for someone, might not work for you !

I agree, i was 100% sure it was my pedal box after reading what some people put up, rang up VW argued my case and turns out it wasn't even related, best thing i could say is take it in for the diagonistic and go from there as it comes up with all the faults, or in my case they fixed the clutch in the diagonostic lol i don't know how but on the way home the clutch was so much lighter and no creaking, but my problem is clutch assembly also gearshaft selector turns out to be leaking.Ian_R wrote: what might work for someone, might not work for you !
Many Thanks

*Update* - Went to VW and they checked out to see what my problem was. Found out u helpful bunch were right, it was indeed the pedal box. The pedal and the clutch cable also needs replaced. Great news is that VW made an "extended warranty" on replacing the pedal box and is goin to do it for free. Only think I have to pay for is the pedal and the clutch cable to get fitted which comes to £70. Very happy with this result. Ill let u knw what its like when I get her back. Cheers in advance tho lads
