Little problem with the 1.4 16V

Post by chunkychimpanzee »

Hi everyone,

I am currently having some little problem with my 6N. Car sometimes stall itself while I change from a higher to lower gear. Someone said to me it could be the thermostat need a bit of clean in order to get away the dirt... but I am not sure whether this is true or not... What do you think??? Any comments would be welcome and much appreciated. Cheers

my 16v started doing that when I bought it. Changed the sensor, cleaned the throttle, plugs, wires etc the revs bounce up n down when put the clutch down towards humps, etc. Still couldn't find the problem but its getting worse

Thats what I thought... I don't think it will do anything if I replace the senor. I really don't know whats wrong to it really... Perhaps we have to live with that fault!!!?? :?

hope not cos at high speed the engine cuts out along with the brakes and power steering. Not a nice feeling

A few people have mentioned the idle valve but i've got to get it serviced so think i'l just take it to the dealer and they'l sort it out whilst doing the service. Let me know if you do that and it works

My 16v cut out in the fast lane on the 4 lane part of the M25 when i was taking my dad to the airport. Crossing three lanes of fast moving traffic with no power, weak brakes and heavy steering was not a pleasant experience. The car started again but would only run for a bit before stopping again. My dad had to get a cab! Anyway first my garage said it was the solenoid and they replaced that. great i thought. The next day it did it again. I got the lamda sensor replaced and it has worked fine for the last 2 years (touch wood). The recent petrol contamination scare effected lamda sensors and highlited that these sensors check on the temerature of the engine and automatically cut out the engine if it gets too hot. It then enables the car to be drive at low speed in order to get it home. You said you had the sensor replaced though so this may not be the problem. There may be other sensors you haven't replaced which do the same job in other parts of the engine. I also only run my car on the better quality high octane petrol to lower the risk of fuel contaminants.

I took the little rubber tube off one of the sensors (the one under the right bottom corner of the engine cover. The problem happens less n sometimes when it won't start I have to fiddle with the sensors n plugs to restart. However I have noticed the steering suddenly getting heavy n the brakes messin up.

Getting myn diagnosed at big boy toys next week, hopefully they'll sort it

I know my cars a mk5 but i was having the same problem as this about a week ago, mine was cutting out when i was reversing and in most gears.

I thought it was to do with the induction kit, so i took it off, cleaned the throttle body, as thats what the diagnostics said was the fault, and luckily it worked.
So i suggest to clean the throttle body and check the temp sensor

Thanks Tailor,
This will sound really silly to ask this question; what is the throttle body? Where can I find this under the bonnet? Sorry, I am not good at mechanic side.. only good at cleaning the body work...
