Hiya all, need help/advice with a few problems, TIA ;)

Post by Kai »

Hi guys,

just found this cool site searching the web for answers to my problems...

I own a 98 Polo (R-Reg) and im having a couple of problems and I need some advice on what they might be/cost...

1. After a lengthy journey last week back home, I was in the middle lane of the M6 and someone had managed to lose a bumper, which I promptly drove over at 72MPH, now it definately made contact with the underside of the car as there were two/three distinct knocking sounds (suprisingly not too loud though).

I pulled into the next service station, and checked the tyres and bodywork, then slowly emerged onto the M6 again, paying particular attention to the steering/engine sound/etc. and all seemed fine.

... Two days later and on returning home (M6), i'm coming onto the M6 and I go into 5th gear (from 4th) and as soon as I pull the clutch up, it slips into neutral, tried this many times and always slips back into neutral (and always, only if 5th gear; all other gears are fine). Strangely, 5th gear was fine for about 1/3rd of the journey, the problem just occured suddenly.

Any idea's guys, i'm taking the car in on monday to get it's 30,000 service done at Volkswagen Solihull and i've asked them to take a look at it, but i'd like some advice on possible causes/costs for this problem, if anyone can help me out.

Sorry for the epic story, but I thought i'd give ya' as much information as possible.

Thanks in advance guys.

Kai.

Hey Kai, and welcome to the forum :)

I've thought about this one, and I can only come up with something quite obvious...

The gearbox is (obviously) underneath the car, and since our cars still have a mechanical linkage system, I can imagine that the run in with the bumper would have caused the linkage system to be off or ill-adjusted - causing fifth to pop out.

Alternatively; but less likely - the gearbox mount is one of the lowest points of the car. If that's been hit I can imagine that it effects the gear selection and may even cause gears to pop out.

Now, all of this is speculation as I haven't experienced this problem (yet) and I've never seen it or heard before either. Perhaps it's still of some use...

:D

Damn,

Took my car in for a service at volkswagen solihull and asked them to check the gears, in particular the gearbox oil and the linkage system.

Picked the car up and was told that the linkage system and gearbox oil were fine, that they would have to do much more work to find the problem...

Any idea's guys & thanks Speedlaw for replying ;)

Regards,

Kai.

hope you solve the problem
