AMP QUESTION.

Hi Guys

Iv just picked up 2 10' JLW3D4(250watts rms each) in a JL power edge double enclousure. The subs are dual type at 4ohms.

What I want to know is,what is the ideal amp that I will need to power these two subs

Iv heard MONO amps are the best for subs and a mate of mine is selling a MONO Alpine MRD M500. Will this do the trick or does it fall short of power

The MRD M500 provides 250 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms or
500 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms.

If this is the wrong amp for me,what amp do you guys recommend and what combination to wire the subs for me to get the best out of the subs?

If I'm thinking right then you'll either need 2 amps that give a similar RMS figure (not critical but is better) as the subs at 2ohms (as they're are Dual 4's)

Or 1 amp that gives about 500w RMS at 1ohm so you can power both from 1 amp.

Ideally I only want 1 amp, really want to avoid buying two. I dont understand all the ohm stuff to tell you the truth

Sorry to sound like a noob, am new to car audio and this is my first install, so I would appreciate all the help I can get!:D

All I know is to look out for an amp that has high power at 2ohms?Is that right?For e.g will an amp that is 500rms at 2 ohms give each sub 250watts rms each?Is that right? Can you connect two subs to a MONOBLOCK AMP?

If they're dual 4ohms woofers as you say, then you'll need an amp that puts out 500w rms at 1 ohm.

Thanks for that link. Good diagram. But will my subs get 250 watts each then if the amp is at 1ohm?

What amp do you recommend for me to power both 10' subs (250 each)???

Yes as they'll both be wired together resulting in a 1ohm load, therefore the 500w will be split between the 2.

basically to run 2x10" subs (dual 4)

youll need an amp that outputs about

600wrms x 1 at 1ohm

or

300wrms x 2 at 2ohm

i say 600 instead of 500 because must subs can handle the extra power providing they have been setup correctly. if you go for a mono amp then aim for one that is stable at 1ohm (a lot of the cheaper one are not)

if you go for a 2 channel amp then aim for one which ouput 300wrms per channel (amp has 2 channels [1 sub attached to each channel]) so each sub would get 300.

for Â£150 your very limited for choice, unless you go second hand, maybe ebay or sumthing.

Yeh I was planning to go with ebay. Im finding it really difficult to find a mono amp that is stable at 1ohm, the majority of the mono amps i have seen are either 4 ohm or 2ohm no mention of 1ohm.
The reason for going with mono is the number of people who have recommended them, but if its a better option going for a 2channel then I will go for this. Whichever as long as its one amp. Has to be powerful though incase I upgrade subs in future.

a Kenwood KAC-9103D would be good. cheap but has the power. Not the best amp in the world but will do the job just fine. 1000w @ 1ohm.

this would give each sub 500wrms. This is a bit too much power for the subs, however if you keep the gain control down on the amp then itll be fine. With this much power going to each sub i would recommend:

- keep gain down
- avoid using bass boost on the amp
- turn off the bass boost features on the head/unit
- keep the eq on the h/u level sound
- avoid using the "loud" function [which most h/u's have]

basically use common sense, dont crank it up to the point its distorting and making you look like a fool. Also with the power theyre getting i would guess that they would get reasonably loud.

Thanks for that,il have a look into it. 500rms sounds good. quite future proof aswell incase I buy something better in the future. Not really keen on kenwood to tell you the truth. Alpine or JL are what comes to mind first, deffinately the more expensive option and pushing my budget aswell. Il have to do a thorough search on Ebay,check whats available.

If I found a MONO AMP that performs at 800watts @ 2ohm can I bridge it so that each one of my 4ohm subs get 400watts rms each which should hopefully be about right without having to make to many adjustments such as the gain and bass boost etc???

this is car audio porn. believe me this amp is the bizness. will do 500wrms at 4ohm which is righty matched with your 2 subs. and will do 1200 at 1ohm for future use. and i will bet you any money that those figures are under-rated meaning in reality the amps probably kicking out 550-ish@4ohm & 1300+ @1ohm if i was on the lookout for an amp i would have snapped this up already. and a bargain considering it costs Â£500 new
