Post by Mac_daddy »

Hey,

I got a 02 - 1.4 S polo and on a recently on a drive up to birminging, I have noticed that when i start my car i get the sign relating to my power steering and a beep. Been in my engine bay today to try locate my power steering fluid point, to see if it needed toping up but not sure where its located. On the passanger side of the engine bay i can see a green lid with a similar sign to that on my dash and im sure thats the power stearing fluid point am i right? hower this look well tricky to even open, let alone top it up. Any help

I believe you have to remove the battery / battery tray to get at it.

Mac_daddy, best to check your battery voltage as it might just be this that is causing the system to malfunction - battery might be "dry" or "dying". Depending on the engine - its possible with the 1.4 75PS BBY, you can unscrew this bottle top and check the fluid level showing on the dip stick moulded into the bottle top. (but it is very ackward as is topping up - if it needs it try buying a "turkey baster" and using it as a syringe. Other possibility is that the sensor has gone duff or if you are really really unfortunate, the power steering pump is u/s - these can be bought online from some of the reconditioners - hate to think what VAG ask for this part.
