Gear gater/ knob question

Post by TimGti »

My gear gater is dying a death and all the leather has cracked and looks generally rubbish :(

Does anybody know if the shafts are a standard size so I can replace with a nicer oem knob like an R32 one etc?

The polo one is 45 odd quid so may aswell get a nicer looking one while im at it!

Yes, the smart money is on cutting through one of the side lugs of the metal clip that holds the gear knob onto the shaft - and replacing it with a jubilee clip. The leatherette gaitor is retained in the centre console by a plastic frame stapled to the gaitor and fixed by two lugs on the front and two lugs on the rear. I bought a complete knob and gaitor frome ebay so that I could find out how it fitted and to get an ebayer to make me a nappa leather gaitor - unfortunately the postman tried, then gave up trying to post this item through my letterbox - he only stopped after breaking off three of the four fixing lugs - dash!! (still have not sent for my new gaitor yet ).
