Timing Belt Tensioner

Hi,

I have just replaced the Head Gasket on my '96 1.4cl Polo due to an oil leak.

But I'm having trouble with the Timing Belt Tensioner. I have replaced the belt and tensioner, but every time I set the tensioner as per Haynes guide. i.e pointer in between notch. When I press the belt or rotate it the pointer moves away from the notch and does not fully return to its position.

Is this a big problem, or can I live with it?

Any help would be appreciated.
