Black rear lights-Tint or not to tint

Post by septic »

Heya guys. I was wondering if any of you could tell me the best way to get my rear lights on my Mk4 to have the black/smoked effect. I don't have enough cash to splash out on smoked rear lights but I've heard about people using tint spray. I checked at Halfords and on the product it clearly says that the spray is for offroad/racing only. Is there an alternative method that is legal? Cheers guys

first of all never go halfrauds because they are the worst for everything and yh u can get tint spray that is legal because i bought a can to do my rear lights with on my mk 4 and now they look really good and u can get them from quite a few places like carnoseur, ebay etc got mine from carnoseur for bout 10 er a can so if u got 1 of those close to ya i suggest gettin it from there and also i suggest thats the only thing u should get from there as carnoseur aint much different from halfrauds

well you can get some Folia Tec red/black tinting spray from Halfords, other places you can some tinting spray is from small independant car related shops. When it comes to spraying use wet and dry paper to get it smooth between coats and make sure you leave it for at least a day before spraying with lacquer.

hope that helps,

Iv been debating this with my mates recently,
I did this not too long ago and it left me with quite a matt effect on my lights is this because i did not laquer?

I was under the impression lights + Laquer = Glare

Theyre are legalities to keep an eye on though. You cant tint em to thick cause then it will be illegal. Saying that i dont think any form of modifying is technically legal so bleh.

If I tint the WHOLE rear light (minus the reflector) will I even pass my MOT?? And will other drivers really be able to see the indicator flashing or the brake lights?

well all depends on how many layers u do, i personally did quite a few layers on mine all over including the reflector and looks quite dark now and i can see indicators, lights, reverse light, brake lights quite clearly, but if you make it so its almost black then i doubt many people are gona be able to see the lights, but i would recommend about 2 - 4 layers is alright
