Some advice please....Spare and price estimate

Post by charlievwp »

Hi there,

 Firstly, I have just had an estimate of £240 + VAT to get my window tints done. Can anyone tell me if this is a good/average price?

 Secondly, its a 1.4SE and I have bought some GTi 16" alloys. I no longer have a spare wheel (and sold original 14"s).
I have spoken with VW and got a quote for the 'gunk' and compressor at £106.00.
My other option (and preferred) would be a space saver but the only one VW can find is for a Golf at £135.99. Obviously the previous spare was only a 14" so I don't see how it can fit in it's place?! :?
TBH, I didn't have too much confidence in the guy who I spoke to....is the bolt spacing even the same from Golf to Polo...I thought there was something like a 3mm difference!?

Any help/advice would be very gratefully received!

The guy near me takes £300 for tints but he ia amazing at it and uses a good quality tint! There is also a place that does it for £150, buy the quality is night and day. You seen any other tints the guy has done?

As for a spare, measure the space you have in your boot then check e bay for spare wheels, sometime see cheap gti alloys on there.

The Polo looks good on the GTI rims. :D

I think the only way to go about getting tints is by recommendation. I've no idea how much the going rate is as it's not really my thing (I'm getting a bit too old for that sort of thing! ) but the quality of stuff does seem to vary going by cars I've seen at shows.

As for the spare wheel, well I can help you a bit more there. Your Polo has a 5x100mm bolt pattern, a mk5 Golf will have a 5x112mm bolt pattern.
Basically the spare wheel would ideally come from another Polo 9N or newer or a 2002 on SEAT Ibiza or a Skoda Fabia. Any of these cars' wheels will fit right on and the gearing will be correct as they use the same diameter tyres.
A mk4 Golf's wheel is also 5x100mm but the tyre will be the wrong size for the Polo, unless it's a mk4 Golf spacesaver which MAY have a correctly fitting combo, but I wouldn't be too sure on that one.
Incidentally a mk3 Golf GTI or VR6 wheel will also fit and have the correct size tyre for your Polo.

Hope that's of some use.

that's expensive for tints IMO, you should easily get some for less than £200 fitted that are good quality.

as for the wheel, buy a compressor and gunk for £50, or get a new spare from ebay for the same!

My polo 9N GTI came with a 15" Steel spare wheel...but I've just bought a 16" GTI alloy off ebay as a spare. This fits in the spare wheel well so is like a direct replacement if i get a puncture...

Ask your local VW dealer for a spare wheel for a polo GTI and you should get a 15" spare wheel, although some GTI's come with the puncture repair kit...

Hope this helps,

Thats brilliant guys, thanks very much for all your comments.
I'll have to get the wheel well measured up and check if it'll fit in ok.

Did any of you 9n guys get over to the Polo show at Billing the other weekend? I went on the Sunday and was the only 9n there!! My car doesn't exactly represent the best modified 9n's around at the moment and was looking forward to meeting up with some of you!

Thanks again peeps, Charlie
