Brake Kit for Track Use?

Post by irhabee »

Can anyone recommend a good brake kit for track use? My car is a 1999 VW Polo 1.4 8V.

The Brembo GT 4 Pot's are suppoed to be quite good, but very expencive £780+

if your talking about upgrading pads and disks there are lots of options

theres the brembo max grooved with pagid fast road pads or EBC greenstuff pads.

or you can also fit bigger disks from a G60 golf on. then put the brembo max grooved from a golf g60 on the front.

what about bigger disks on the front and swap the drums for disks on the rear.

what do you want and how much you wanna spend

Very pricy mod there, this because you will have to swap your "fusee" on each side (dunno the english word for it, it's the part on which your caliper is mounted), on the standard mk4 "fusee's" you can't fit Golf mk2 G60 or Corrado size brakes, first you will need to swap your standard "fusee"for mk5 GTI "fusee's", only then will the 280mm VW brakings (caliper and disc) fit

by fitting bigger disks i did mean a brake conversion to G60 parts. like you mentioned.

and the part you refer to as the fusee is the caliper mount or guide. us english arent very imaginative.

most of my first post was sarcastic as the guy didnt actually tell us what he wanted hence i mentioned the brembo Gt brake upgrade as its like £££, what i think they guy wanted was just a recommendation on pads and disks, and if he took the time to use the search button he would have found a post in the first few pages where you recommended some brake parts.

i was just n00b bashing so i must apologize.

Thank you for your replied. I checked the Brembo GT, but unfortunately they dont make kit for the Polo. I will be using the car for a track competition which is 7 continuous laps on part of a f1 circuit that is very demanding on brakes. In other words, I need something that can take a lot of abuse without fading. I also need something that is a straight install, I prefer if the parts come ready in a box and will fit straight on the car rather than take the brakes off another car and try to adapt them on mine. I am willing to spend 1000 pounds provided that it is a straight fit.

 sorry, totally mist that point

But since his last post I think your right, spending 1000pounds on a straight swap set which will be F1 track proof  who just took some pill's and went off to Lala-Land?

what spec is the car. please for the love of god dont tell me its a standard 1.4 8v pulling 60bhp. cos your better running round the track (no brake fade.)
or is it something like jarno's beast dunno what hes quoteing as bhp but he has an extencive list of engine mods.

first off the 22mm master cylinder is a straight swap from the passat (google will tell you the year)

the Ibiza Cupra R is the same platform as the polo so you can swap the brembo 4 piston setup for the existing one. then match that with a set of brembo max disks and ebc yellow or blue pads

i forgot to say you need minimum of 16" wheels for this conversion

dont use those pad for the drive home they only work when hot. swap to the greenstuff for the drive home

it might be worth calling deamon tweaks or gti-performance and telling them what you want hell deamon tweaks will build your car for you if you throw money at them

warrmr,

I did try searching but couldn't find what I was looking for. If I was in the UK, then I would look into customizing the setup and getting parts from other cars adapted to fit my car cause you do have garages there that can do decent work. I am in Bahrain, where you have very few people modding VW's and very few garages that can do a decent job.
Ofcourse the car isn't stock. It's got a 1.6 pushing an esitmated 160hp. I havent dynoed it yet but will do so soon. I've got more mods coming and my aim is to eventually have 200hp.
I've already got 17" wheels on so the setup you recommended is doable. I will look into it. I've already checked with demon tweeks but they have nothing to offer for the Polo. Can you give me the website for gti-performance?
I've got the car pretty much built already, just need to finish up some pending stuff like the brakes and gauges. Other than that it is pretty much done.

How about some pics of that!

I remember seeing this brembo kit for the polo a while back on the portuguese polo forum. Don't know if its track ready, but it sure looks like that!

Putting a 8-piston caliper on a Polo

totally mental! You will kill yourself on the track with this m8, this is made for "heavy" cars, and since the mk4 Polo weighs under 1000kg, this is to much, far to much, just blowing at the brake-pedal will make your wheels block and get your car spinning round on the track :(

By the way, it's also a 5-stud set, while the mk4 Polo is 4-stud, so it will never fit, unless you swap the front caliper mount (thanks again warrmer for the english word   ) like I stated earlier, but now with a Seat Ibiza one (make sure it's a 5-stud model though  )

IRHABEE: still we don't know what Polo your driving, is it a 1.6 8v, or 1.6 16v GTI? If it's a GTI it's a lot easier to upgrade your brakes, if it's a 8v, your in for a big-arse amount of money to spend, or your in for being satisfied with fewer brakeresults

And also I am very interested in what you've modded so far, since 160bhp from an 1.6 isn't quite stock, especially from an 8v (almost impossible to get 160bhp from an 8v, unless you totally f*ck your reliability, or get it charged by turbo/compressor/g-charger)
So...... give us some specifications here please 8)

6 Pistons, that looks quite impressive. Are you sure that is a Brembo Pedro? Though I am surprised because I've checked the brembo website and it said it had nothing to offer for the Polo. I'm gonna try to contact them direct in case they have something for the Polo but they havent included it on their website. Thanks for the help everyone, anymore feedback is welcome.

Jarno,

Point taken, 8 piston is overkill. That leaves me with only the option that warrmr gave.

With regards to my car, following is the spec:

-car started as a 1999 1.4 8v

I used to be involved in autocross previously so I did all the mods required for that, mainly anti-roll bars front and back, tower strut bars front and back, and H&R coilovers.

Car needed power so I looked at transplanting a VR6 but was too concerned with weight distribution and I couldnt source the engine locally as VWs are not very popular here. My attention then went to the 1.8 turbo but I was put off with by the price (over to 4000 pounds), unavailability of the engine here, and lack of expertise who could transplant such an engine.

I eventually gave in and (please dont bash me for doing this, I looked at other VW engines but as I am located in a country were VWs are not popular and very few parts can be found for them) I bought a half cut Honda integra for 500 pounds. That gave me the engine, gearbox, wiring loom and the ecu. I transplanted the engine (1.6 Vtec, not the type r, 160hp stock) and the car is running fine.

Everything else in the car is the standard polo item with the exception of what I mentioned above.

Hope the above helps in knowing what I will be driving. Now, any chance someone can recommend another solution for upgrading the brakes. I will be contacting Brembo directly to see if they are offering anything.

it was awsome GTI not GTI performace

check out the project cars. these guys know there stuff. if between them and jarno6n they cant sort you out then no one can.

good luck with your project.

surley if you can transplant a honda engine in a VW then you have the knowlage to transplant a 20vt in there. oh well

as for breaks have a look round scrapyards, they are bound to have a smashed up ibiza. or if you give one of the members a shout over here let them know what you want they could pick it up and post it.

EDIt: question answered by above post, removed silly question.

warrmr,

I've already sent an email to awesome and I am waiting for a reply. As you said, they definitely know there stuff.
I personally dont have the knowledge to transplant an engine, but the 1.8T has such a complicated wiring system that garages here are unfamiliar with. The Honda on the other hand has far more simpler wiring due to its old age.
Not many Ibiza's around here cause they just started selling Seat;s about a year or two back. I will most probably have to visit the dealer to see what the new part costs and whether it would be worth it.

It's worth it, because it is a straight swap, which will give you more then enough braking power.

What you will need (for the front brakes):

-the brake-caliper mounts from a Polo GTI (number 4 on the picture)

Image

With these you will be able to install the brake calipers from a VW Corrado G60

-brake calipers VW Corrado G60 (these WILL NOT fit the original 1.4 8v mk4 Polo brake calipers mounts!!!)
-VW Corrado G60 discs (or for instance Zimmermann, ATE or Brembo discs that will fit the VW Corrade G60)
-VW Corrado G60 brake pads (or for instance EBC, Ferodo or Brembo pads that will fit the VW Corrade G60)
-brakehosing from a VW Corrado G60 (or for instance Goodridge ones which are steelinforced ones)

For the rear you will need:
-the rearaxle (including all brake calipers, discs and pads) from a Polo mk4 1.4 16v (100bhp edition) or the mk4 Polo GTI (the axle of a Polo mk5 GTI or Seat Ibiza Cupra 6K will fit too, but require some modifications)
-also here you can choose to take different discs or pads or brakehosing (grooved and/or drilled discs, higher-compound pads, steelenforced brakehosing etc. etc. for more brakingpower)

All of this can also be installed with the original VW ABS system, since this is available on the G60 and Polo 16v or GTI brake calipers

Now that I have helped you a bit, I demand som epictures of that V-Tec of yours lying in the front-end of your Polo  8) (I'm curious to be precise  )
