Considering Polo 1.9 Tdi Sport

Haven't posted for ages, signified by the fact that my account has been deactivated due to inactivity, and so I've had to create a new user name (change of email address)!

Anyway, tried out a 3 door Polo 1.9 Tdi Sport with all the bits at work last weekend and was rather impressed - shifts rather well!

So, just done a few quick insurance quotes on the net, expecting silly figures, but was pleasantly surprised by Tesco's quote of about £1630 (18 yr old, fully comp on my own policy). This might seem a bit steep for most of you lot, but considering I'm paying about £1000 at the mo for a 1.2 65bhp in my Dad's name, it really is not that bad.

However, I have one major reservation about the car - it's brakes. I've tried 2 now and the brakes on both have really been lacking in feel, and not that effective really - not very reassuring. What are your thoughts on this and the rest of car in general?

Also, am I right in thinking you can get them chipped to about 130bhp?

Considering a derv as I'll be heading off to uni next September, and the 1.2 really is rather gutsy!

I too am considering a TDi Polo when my current 9n reaches 40,000 miles. But only if the 130bhp model becomes availiable in the UK.

But if a GTi doe come out I'll be ordering one of those straight away!

Yeah, I'd love a GTI also, but I'm pretty sure both the 130 and GTI would be out of my reach insurance-wise at 18!

The 1.9 is a wicked choice, I came from a 175 BHPish car to get one

The brakes didn't feel good? That's strange as the first time I pressed the brakes I nearly went through the windscreen!

You can chip it yes, and I’ve driven a GT TDI 130 (Golf) and I can honestly say there was hardly any difference. Sure you can chip the 130 to 160 that would be quick. It's got more than 100BHP as standard anyway, I have driven lots of 100BHP cars and it just feels quicker. I'll have to put my car on the R/R to check this.

When I test drove a couple of TDI's there were 'okay' and I still wanted one, but as mine is running in more and more it just seems to get quicker and feels more alive (not to mention the almost dream like economy)

If you get a nicely spec'd one you'll be happy, and add your 'own mods' to it and you'll be well away.

When you get it onto the motorway, the mid-range pull is astonishing not to mention how the turbo sounds!

I normally get bored with cars easily, and even VW's new offering of the Golf, or the new Audi A3 isn't tempting me to part with my Polo. The only car I would like is an R32 or M3, and to be honest at those prices I would rather save for an house. The TDI is a good all round choice.

If you get one, wait till you reach 15,000 miles plus, then it really begins to fly.

Excellent choice, come join the Diesel boys, you'll never (and I mean that) go back to Petrol. Oh, Amd do 'Oneclick' for the Polo, so by then you're looking at 145bhp and 220lb's torque. But you'd seriously need traction control if you were to consider it.

I'm unsure of what size the brakes are on the TDI100. If they're 256mms, then I totally agree with you as my old 1.4 100bhp Sport Ibiza was exactly the same. Unfortunately, my TDI 130 Ibiza is exactly the same, with 288mm brakes. I am to get this sorted with some real brakes in a year or so.

As a reference, I pay £1015 for my TDI 130 Ibiza. That's with 2 years NCB by the way.

Basically, it all depends on which university I'll be heading to next September! My current first choice is Bath, who don't like students bringing their cars to the uni.

If I end up going there, I'll be selling the current Polo and just using the family car whenever I come home from uni.

However, I'm off to Nottingham next Wednesday to take a look around there, and I'm told it's a very impressive uni. So, if I change my mind and prefer to go to Nottingham, the petrol-to-diesel change might well be on the cards! (As well as the mandatory engine chippin'!)

Hi Ratty,

If you do go for the TDI 100 Sport, you will be impressed, mine is alround very impressive, but:

if you chip it, like mine is, then that Economy goes right out the window, along with your front tyres mine is an abismal 35 ~ 45 Mpg depending on weather and driving conditions.

The brakes are perfect, if you need to stop from very high speeds (and you will, as it is very quick 130mph) then the Brake assist will help you, and stop you very safely, can not complain about that,

Only complaint that i have is about the rear wash hose, Always pops off in the winter, mine has parted company twice in one month, and it is very annoying, other than that, it is a Mega car

Oh yeah, and the clutch Will slip if you chip it to silly levels like mine is (150Bhp) as my curve is so aggressive, but this is only noticable in the very cold weather, like we are getting just now.

I'm on the same boat as Ratty when it comes to keeping/changing my car because if I go to University College London then I can NEVER drive there firstly due to the CC, secondly due to lack of parking and the mass of traffic in central London. In which case there would be no point in even having a car if you cant use it 5 days of the week and it costs 1300 to insure the bugger! However if I go to a "far away" uni Like Royal Holloway then I can drive there and park there due to its more its "rural" location but I will be comprimising on uni quality. Ahhhh, Life's little dilemas
