Sat Nav

Post by iggy350 »

Ok guys I just recieved a Sat Nav as a gift. But i dont wanna just stick it to my window and look like a tool driving down the road like that :P

Just wanna see how/if you guys have mounted yours in any special way. I was thinking on a locking hinge in the gap below the ash tray box.

Idea and pics welcome :)

Thanks peeps

Hi,

I have mine on the r/h side of the screen right down in the corner. I think it goes well there and dosent block the view of the road. Ive hardwired the power supply into the dash so the cable comes out of the dash by the windscreen rather than draping across the dash. I like the idea of having it monted in the little cubby hole, but wouldnt it be hard to see there, or will you just use the voice directions?

dunno yet :P i think ill mostly use the voice, however i have my mp3 player down there atm so when i change track i look down there now :P

but im soon getting a 160gig usb powered hardrive and im gunna transfer my tacks to that and my head unit can then control that through so my mp3 player is useless and that space becomes available :P

However i was also considering mounting it in my Sun visor maybe a better i dea i dunno yet :)

not sure how sunvisor wld work and wld be a bit tricky to wire up. Mines the same as nick, tucked into the right hand side and hard wired in behind the dash. I hard wired in an extention lead and plugged it into that so if i want to use the SATnav say in a mates car i just unplug it behind the glovebox and whip it out. I put a switch on the lead so i can have the satnav in and just turn it on and off at the flick of a button which is quite cool. Hey it would be so awesome if u fibreglassed it into the bit under the ashtray

Depending on how big the Satnav is how about wacking it in one of the front central console airvents. You can easily take the grill bit off, and can seal off the air vent blocking plastic thing at the balck with a bit of tape, and your sorted. you can easily view it and is not in such an inconveint place.

hehe believe it or not that was my first idea, however it would look odd with one of the vents blocked, i like things to be symetrical :P god i sound like a right picky pratt hehe

if your not too bothered about safety lol you could mount the satnav in the center of your steering wheel where the airbag sits. If you ever wana sell your car on just get a second hand steering wheel and keep your current airbag too.

Found any rims yet?

would be a nightmare but taking out the airbag can't be that hard to remove. Would be funny (for everyone else) if the bag blew in your face unexpectidly!!!!

It'l be a great mod to have though seeing people put remotes, screens etc into em.

lol a Screen to the face :P

Oh and Noz I have seen some rims but they are too expensive for me :P So im still looking, I want some where the spokes are inset a little so i have an edge around the wheel, like some of the guys have on here :) i think they work well with the polo.

However this is the Sat Nav mounting topic and I dont think I have the skills to mount it in the steering wheel hehe, altho Id love to see it hehe
Altho if you get a Tom Tom, Tom might get confused with being upside down and tell you to go left, instead of right and you'll plow into somebodys house hehe

Like the steering-wheel idea!!!

Just a little point, the satnav will have to have a clear view to the sky to get a GPS fix, unless you have an external antenna.
