Gearbox :/

Post by iggy350 »

Ok i need one your engine mechanical minds to answer this question hehe.

My gearbox is naffed lol so I'm gunna take it out and get another one from the scrappers, they have a Hachback 1.6 polo in just like mine, however, if that ones gear box is already gone, they have a 1.6 Polo estate, will this gear box fit the hachback model?

i dont see why not but would like clarrification

Thanks peeps

Estates is the british word for the saloon/station/limo one right? (with the trunk?)

then it won't fit, those engines are based on the Golf's chassis, which is wider. Putting in a 2.0 16v ro 1.8 20vT in a "estate" is almost straight swap, due to this different chassis-base

I'd recommand getting the box from a 1.4, shorter gearratio's, will decrease your top-speed, but increase the acceleration-time. And who cares about top-speed, I hardly drive at top-speed, but accelerate every day

Hum i found a 1.6 gearbox for £176 pretty cheap tbh. But a AEE gearbox fit a AEA Engine? Im not 100% sure if my car is an AEA I hope its not.

Just check the markingsticker on the timingbeltcover, your enginecode is on that.

But boxes of a AEE and AEA are swappeble, but they have to be from a mk4 Polo, there were also AEA and AEE engines build in Golfs, dunno for sure these boxes will fit your wheels (dunno the english word, it's "aandrijfassen" in Dutch, or "antriebswellen" in German, the things between your wheels and your gearbox that trasmit the rotating from the box to the wheels)

Jarno (mechanical genius u) does this mean if i have a 1.4 8v, that sticking in a 1litre gearbox will increase acceleration? and if so, will it decrease top speed by alot? thanks

Well, compare it with bicycles, riding a (short-geared) mountain-bike or riding a (high-geared) Tour de France look-a-like is completely different. The latter will make it possible for you to reach high top-speeds, which is of no use "in-the-field" on your mountain-bike, on which you can speed up faster due to the shorter-gear-ratios.

A 1 liter box does have (slightly) shorter gears, compare these top-speeds (got it from Dutch car-comparison site, looked up all mk4 8v's)

1.0 - 145km/h
1.3 - 156 km/h
1.4 - 160 km/h
1.6 - 172 mk/h

And of course the 1.0 o-60mph time is far slower, but that's due to it's lack of power, to compensate VW gave it a box with (slightly) shorter gearratio's, to not make it the snail it could have been

I know a geezer who drives in a 1.6 with a 1.3 box, the damn thing can keep up with a G40 at the stoplights I've been told --> point made I'd say
