6N2 Gti - Sidelight replacement (without taking bumper off)

Firstly no disrespect to mk4 glx 1.6 for posting a brilliant and thorough walkthrough on this procedure. But for those of you who would like an alternative to taking the bumper off please read on.

Firstly I recommend reading through mk4 glx 1.6 thread http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/poloforum/v ... =sidelight

these are the tools you might need. Notice there is a mirror too!


Next, in order to remove the indicator unit, twist the small black plastic headed lock that is indicated in the picture, so that the "pins" are parallel with the car i.e one facing the front bumper, one facing the windscreen (as indicated in the picture). caring out on both sides.


simply remove the unit by pulling towards the front


Now remove the air intake hose, and disconnect the HID cable, simply pull back the sleeve, then twist the connector off. Much like a household light bulb (bayonet).


Now you will be able to unscrew 3 screws securing the headlight cover and pull off. The images below are 'Stolen' from mk4 glx 1.6 walkthrough. They are merely to show the location of the 3 screws




Next undo the bolt securing the battery. Undo the negative terminal. Then swivel the battery towards the engine like so. Disconnect the HID cable




Now it is time to fit your new sidelights. If you have read mk4 glx 1.6 thread this part is very straight forward. Simply pull out the sidelight housing, and replace the old bulbs with your new ones.


reconnect your battery temporarily and check everything is in working order before reversing this procedure.


1. Disconnect the the battery again.
2. Replace the the headlight covers (both sides).
3. Screw in the 3 screws (both sides).
4. Reconnect the HID cables (both sides).
5. Replace the indicator units (both sides).
6. Reposition the battery. resecure and reconnect.
7. Reconnect the air intake hose.
8. Congratulations I think your done!!!!!!

Great stuff ticki, i'm glad you have found a way to do it without the bumper removal . I just did it removing the bumper as everyone had said it was only possible that way.

Just a couple of questions:
1) What is the tool at the bottom of the first pic, that looks like a pen? (I hope it isn't as straight forward as being a pen lol, I assume it could be a magnet).
2) How do you disconnect the HID cable, does it just pull off, or need twisting?

Hi there.

1) that is a magnetic pick up tool incase you drop any screws.

2) HID cable. simply pull back the sleeve. then twist the connector off. Much like a household light bulb (bayonet).

I had a go at doing this earlier today,

I couldnt locate 3 bolts that remove the back headlamp cover though?

and i couldn't swivel the battery either after removing the negative terminal and the visible bolt and clamp!?

decided to go with what i know and remove the bumper, but two wheel arch rounded off bolts cancelled that idea

ah located the 3 bolts now, just gotta wait for it to stop raining

i still havn't mastered the battery though, anyone know what stops the battery from swivelling other than the bolt at the front and the negative terminal?

na that should be it mate, maybe a little coaking might be needed. make sure there are not any cables blocking the path you need to move the battery to.

Dood guide this,i carried it out today with no major problems.I would say that you should allow alittle time to this is its alittle tricky and fiddly in some places.It took me about and hour and a half to do so allow plenty of time.

nice little guide saves the hassle of taking the bumper off. is very fiddly to do and has taken me about 2hours

Read this great guide some years ago and now again as sidelight broken lately.

Successful on the battery side. But caught by the intake hose on the other side.

Is there any trick to remove the intake hose? or just brute force?

The hose seems very difficult to detached from the panel on the side of the wing.
