Is the basic GTI gearbox used in anything else?

Post by tegwin »

Im planning to strip and rebuild my GTI gearbox rectifying any issues as I go and plan to document everything as I go...

But...Before I go tearing my genuine GTI gearbox appart i wouldnt mind having another box to practice on first...

Are there any other polo gearboxes that are practically identical to the GTI box? (Given that ratios etc will vary!)

Every polo cable change box up to the 9n are the same. Only the ratio's differ. The only part you may be able to upgrade would be the fifth gear roller bearing, which is made from plastic with metal rollers. All other bearings are made by timkin so no better bearing is available. You may also be able to fit heavier duty rivets to the diff housing as thats apparantly a weak spot, though mine seemed fine around that area. Its quite a mission to rebuild one and takes a fair old time to do it. I did post somewhere a while back all the part numbers inc timkin numbers for every bearing, seal and clip you'll require. Just do a search for timkin.
