Hey...whats happened is the standard clutch is a bit too hard for the rest of the components...so the clutch cable pulls HARD on the bracket that it sits on, which is located on the pedal box.

It would break this bracket and the clutch pedal would just drop leaving you without a clutch...

the job requires removal of the pedal box/steering column and bottom dash parts...

then they can either reweld the bracket on OR buy another pedal box and re-install it.

When it happened in my mk4 polo (1996) i paid approx £300ish...due to the labour involved.

In my current polo...i did it myself.

Here is a picture of mine and the 2nd pic shows how it was seam welded for strength:

that bracket sort of acts like a feed for the cable itself...

the clutch cable isn't expensive anyway- most likely about £10-15.

the welding isn't expensive either and if its fixable and done to a high standard, then it shouldn't break again. It'll be better and longer lasting than another pedal box with the same s**t spot welds.

If you know a cheap enough mechanic...take it to him and you should save a bit on labour. 8)
