Built like a brick s**t house these are. I'd reckon it takes to about 160k before it gives in.

I think these engines can last a long time (160,000+) if you treat it well.

Change the oil regularly - it's a very easy DIY job and needn't cost the earth. For example, GSF will sell you an oil filter for about 3 quid and some Fuchs synthetic oil (quite highly rated) for about 17 quid. I think the standard interval is about 10,000 miles but the more often you change the oil, the better. I change mine every 6500 miles or so. Use a good semi synthetic or fully synthetic from somewhere decent like GSF.

Drive the engine carefully. Keep the revs down until it's warmed up. Oil takes about twice as long to heat up as the coolant - but you only have a coolant temperature needle in the car. So let that get to the middle and then continue to keep the revs down (less than 25,000 -3,000rpm) for a further 5-10 minutes. Also try to take it easy for the last 5 minutes or so of every journey to just cool the engine a little.

Maybe change the coolant for some VW G12+ (again, cheap from GSF) to make sure the coolant is doing it's job properly.

Hope that helps.

Well just read it through and I suppose it does!

Challenge you to get decent synthetic oil and a good oil filter for cheaper though....!

You can also try:

-www.seatspares.co.uk (never used them.... yet)
-Euro Car Parts who, sometimes are very good, other times not. For example, it took 3 tries to get the right radiator for the Ibiza. First one was for a 1.4, the second had the hose mountings on the wrong side and cost over double what the correct item should've cost. A real pain in the backside, I ended up taking my damaged rad in and out several times and driving around with it for three weeks longer than necessary, had they identified the right part. I even gave them the OE part number, they had no excuse for getting it wrong (twice), in my opinion.
-VW or Seat main dealers. More expensive.
-Halfords or similar. More expensive, in my experience

My MKII had 187,000 miles on it when I sold it - same engine base as my MKIV

Bottom line

- fix things when they need fixing
- Oil and filter at regular intervals
- Antifreeze change every other year
- don't thrash from cold

It should do 250,000 miles before it needs a freshen up inside and that would only be rings and bearing shells

I had a strangled 1.1 in a 5hit punto pushing 145k when I got it. Engine looked nasty but it ran as sweet as a nut lol. Never had to spend a dime so 150k shojld be possible with TLC.

Hi, This will give you all confidence in your cars... We had a Mk3 Golf 1.4L in the garage the other day with an AEX 1.4L Engine (same as the polo) .. the golf is basicly an infalted polo.. so its all relativly similar...And it has just coverd 198,000 miles! The engine is as quiet as my AEX which has only just done over 100k miles, It was actualy quieter because i got a knocking lifter! lol

It was on its seccond clutch, Had regular services (our garage had taken care of it for the past 8 years) Only problems we found was a split CV Gaiter and a corroded brake pipe! One woman has owned it from new and taken it up to manchester and back ever other weekend, aswell as traveling many miles per week for commuting and general use. Its been in and out of the garage a fair bit for general work to keep it good, Engines alwas been good though, gear box has now got VERY noisy but its been like that for 10k miles and we told her to bring it in for a gear oil change every 5k miles untill it goes (because it will sooner or later) but nearly 200k on a 1.4VW Gear box is bloody amazing its self!!!!

1 million miles should be possible if kept nicley.

its a little different but i know a guy who had a transit van with 900,000 miles on the clock. that was serviced per the book and never had a replacemement engine or rebuild..

it was starting to die at that point so he sold it.

but yeah a VW should go on for ever if kept nicley.
