problem with my gears

i was driving home the other night and i lost all gears the gearstick was stuck solid in 3rd gear position but was in neutral and now its very loose as if nuthings there , the recovery guy said that it was something broken at the bottom of the gear stick can any1 help me please

i had a problem with very sloppy gears, and then they locked, when i checked undderneath i found some sort of tensioning cable which bolts to the gearbox had come adrift, bolted it back up and it was fine
