My MPG

Post by alanyboy »

hi

joined the forum a while ago and iv just been reading really. quick question.

i filled my car up to the top (1.6 gl) the other day and now it is almost empty and i have got around 205 miles to the tank. im thinking that its not doing the mpg it should be even though i have mostly been going around town but also involved some country roads and dual carriageways.

is this about right or is it a bit s**t ?

cheers

That sounds very poor, although you may be a foot to the floor driver for all we know.
Seriously though, when I had a period of high fuel consumption on my 1.4 it turned out to be the lambda sensor which is the gizmo fixed on the exhaust down pipe that monitors air/fuel mixture gases and adjusts these accordingly.
Get your fault codes read by a dealer or vw specialist.
I reckon you are getting about half the mpg's you should be getting .
Alternatively if you have a laptop, get the free vag software on the net and a lead from a well known auction site and read them yourself, however you still need knowledge to determine a solution.

I'd have thought a 1.6 around town will get about 280-320 to a tank. So MPG is down, but it's a bit vague - maybe it wasn't full when you filled up, or you filled it up when there was still 1/4 tank left.

and we all know the bottom 1/4 of a tank is actually more like 1/3 on a mk4 polo!

do a proper estimate - fill it right up, so XXX miles, fill it up again and work out how many miles you're doing per gallon or litre.
