Hello folks,
Noobie to the Polo forums so go easy on me - i'm looking for a bit of help on the wives car. Its a X registered 1.0 polo - which i guess makes it the mk5 ( correct? ) Up until now, its been warrantied and dealer serviced - while we will still get the services done to keep the history up, i dont really want to shed out loads of money when i can fix things myself.
The problem is the idling - its erractic and low peed driving is jerky. I have read some of the posts on this forum and others that it needs a temp sensor part for about £20. I bought this from the dealer and compared it against the one on the car itself - the electrical connector is differently shaped. the part i bought has a square end with 4 contacts, but the one on the car has 4 contact with rounded mouldings. i haven't proceeded any further.
I then wanted to take the black cover off the engine and i undid the 2 screws on the top - and it wouldn't lift off - so can someone give a quick run down on how to undo and remove this?

now i can hear you all think - this chap has never touched a spanner, but i beg to differ - my car is a 4.0 EFI V8 Range Rover and i've happily stripped engines down, changed clutches etc etc on a variety of land rovers.
So you can imagine - its a wee bit annoying that i cant get a black cover off this polo engine! I wanted to get it off to look at the inlet and throttle body to see how clean it is.
any thoughts and help on what the correct part number should be would be much appreciated.

Hi Don, and welcome to the forum.
If your car's engine code is ALD (given that it's a 2000-2001 1.0 Petrol engine) the correct part number for the temp sensor should be 059 919 501 A. Is that different from what you've got now?
Can't really help you with the engine cover, as I've never seen one IRL I'm afraid. (Mk4 owner myself)

The part number i bought was 357 919 501 A - which i guess must have been for mk4 or other engines. I got this as it was the most commonly quoted part number in a number of threads
what i'll do is phone the garage and see about getting the other part number.
i wonder if they'll swap ( not bluddy likely eh? )

They might just be willing to swap it - I know my local dealer did just that when I got one (long story). Even if it's used for a week, they still considered it 'new'. Went right back on the shelves.

Edit:
Just wanted to add that you could (or maybe *should*) have the parts guy check the part with the engine code of your car. So if you tell him what engine code you've got (should be on the cam belt cover, three letters) he can find out for sure what part you need.

well,
a bit of feedback - i got the sensor changed over - the new one was a few pounds more expensive, but the guy let me swap it over for nothing which was nice of him.
fitted it - took all of a couple of minutes, and took it for a run. Instantly better.
so thanks very much guys for your help.
I'll know where to come to when the next problem arises.
