BUYING A 16v BUT ITS MAKING WIERD NOISES --- NEED ADVICE!!

Post by Acemo »

ok went to look at a 16v polo about a week ago, took it on a test drive down the road, pulled up in a car park, turned the engine off to have a look at the oil cap, to see if the head gasket had gone, it looked fine so i got back in the car, tried startin it up and it didnt

guy from the dealership said it had fun out of petrol, so i waited about for a bit and he drove it back up to me at the garage

--- IMPORTAND BIT ---

got back in and the rev counter was flicking between 1200 and 1400 rpm

i told him about it and he said he would fix it, today i got a text off him saying it was fine

is he lieing to me or wat, im so confused, i just want a 16v polo

Take another test drive which shouldn't be a problem with him if everythings fixed. Also you got to atleast test drive a car for 30mins cos certain symptoms may not surface until the cars warm.

the throttle body can play up on these mate,,,can normally be reset and fixed by simply taking the battery off for a while and letting reset,,mine needed a new one though...plus the temp sender can go which doesnt help but there only cheap..ask him what it was itll be either of the two..

mine used to do this every now and then.

changed temp sender, cleaned out throttle body, didn't do it for a while, and then did again

eventually it stopped pretty much altogether.

I know this doesn't help much, but it might shed some light on the matter.

it won't blow up if it's genuinely just hunting for the right revs. can't guarantee it but a test drive will help you out.

what a load of rubbish the throttle body does NOT reset it self when the battery off
you need to use software like vag com to reset it.

sounds to me the throttle body need totaly removing and all black gungy from the venturi and butterfly getting rid of with brake/ carb cleaner
then running up to 80 degrees (using temp from vagcom not dash pannel)
then going in to engine > basic setting > 060 or 098 with engine turned off this readapts throttle to basic settings and you will be fine afterwords.

the weird noises where about are they coming from more info please??

This problem isn't easily vixed as it could be something simple or something you'll never manage to find. he only thing I haven't done yet is VAGCOM it. Everything else plus leads, plugs changed etc and ECU reset. The cam sensor could be one of the culprits too. Need to get mine sorted yet but found when its freezign cold like was a few weeks back it had the problem. In summer it never hunted for revs lol

I will argue that to the death.

Certain cars will reset in the VAG range - par example bens 16v 1.4 polo. We cleaned the Tb out, and i misaligned the TB by accident and messed up rev ranges - battery off for an hour fixed it. I would have used vag com, but didnt have it to hand.

ok guys thanks for the help BUT

i went down yesterday after work

took it for a test drive, he spent so much money on fixing that problem he put the price up 200 quid hahah

anyway it was running fine, everything was pucka, apart from the drivers electric window, looked to me as if one runner thing had fallen off, got it up fine by pulling it up

bought the little puppy!!!

took it rownd town, saw my mates n showed them it, i had my window less than half open, closed my door, got a facefull of bloody glass

nice 1 window.

so now im sat here with a bloody weapon of a car sitting on my drive coverd in plastic binbags, thanks BCS garage in BLACKBURN

It is a known fact that you shouldnt close doors with the window down lol its happened to a mate of mine. Scrapyard should be able to sort you out with the glass ;)
