engine bay cleaning
I used to work as a valeter and hated having to steam clean/pressure was the engine bay, it just seems so wrong like you are asking for trouble! i would never do it on my own car! i only use cloths with gegreasing product/polish and good old elbow grease. a damp cloth followed by rubber dressing on all the black rubber piping, and vinal dressing on the black plastic. i really wouldnt want to be squirting water or hot steam into parts of the engine or electrical areas, but if you really must then make sure you mask everything off with plastic bags and tape up etc as best you can. anything thats bare metal and oily is best left that way in my oppinion as it provides a natural protection from the elements, but plastic, rubber and painted surfaces are fine to be cleaned and protected in the same way you would on the rest of the car. (well thats what i do anyway) and unless you are after trophies for your bay and you have a seious show car then i would stick to the outside as its what is going to be seen. Having said that though i have seen some stunning engine bays and have nothing but respect for the amount of work some guys are willing to invest in something that most of the time only they will see.
