Hello,

Just won this leather steering wheel on fleabay

looked a steal for a leather upgrade (will make driving alot more comfortable as i'm used to a BMW 3-series..)

And i'll be following these instructions (bar switching from 4-spoke to 3-spoke as i already have a 3-spoke)

Oooonly problem is, I'm getting majorly confused as to which vag-com system i need (there are loads on ebay). From my homework i believe i need the can-bus system on the vag-com, but i can't seem to find one!

Can anyone help..?

Hi Mate,
I dont think you need to worry about any of that. When I fitted my Golf MK5 steering wheel it was simply take the old one off - which is easy, put the new one on, reconnect the airbag then fit the airbag again. It took all of five mins to do. Does your airbag look like it'll fit in the Golf wheel? If so to fit it to your car should be the no worries.

you know when you have the wheel off, is it like a hex head fitting to it what it slides on, or some way of making sure when you put the new one back on its smack bang in the same position as the one you took off, or is it just guesswork?

also do you have a part number for the wheel you have with the red stitching?

and is it just an easy straight swap, or more involved

is the wheel the same size as standard, or larger or smaller

Questions are no worries - you'v answered enough of mine! There are markings to line up the steering wheel so there is no guess work - plug and play

The wheel appears to be smaller than standard, but in reality they are as good as the same size. Biggest difference is the straight part at the bottom of the wheel. The difference the wheel made to my car I cant quite explain, somehow it just feels nicer to drive. Probably all in my head but you'll only get what I'm saying when you fit one and drive. I'm working on the multifunction wheel controls now as I have an Alpine stereo fitted which can take OEM wheel controlls - think I can get it working but still a few things to work out.

Just tried to fit the wheel...

I cant get the airbag off!!

It took three people and we still couldn't get it off.

This begs the question: are we retarded? (don't answer that one please)

Gonna try explain this, but its a bit difficult. This is what I did and is probably wrong and I was lucky not to blow the airbag and start world war 3 or something - what I'm saying is follow these instructions at your own risk.

Disconnect the battery, make sure the battery cant reconnect somehow - wait 15 mins just to be sure

Turn the wheel about 1/4 turn and if you feel round the back of the wheel you should be able to feel a square hole. CAREFULLY put a medium blade screw driver in there and feel for a securing lug - gently pry that whilst CAREFULLY pulling the airbag. When it gives turn the other way and find the second square hole and repeat. The airbag/horn unit will come away.

The airbag connection is very tight, but tug it on the connection and it will come off.

Any help?

Forgot to say when you reconnect your battery your auto open/close function on the electric windows wont work if you have it. To reset it turn the ignition so the electrics come on but dont start the car. drop both windows all the way at the same time then close both windows at the same time and keep the buttons held until you hear a relay click. That should reset the auto open/close function
